Changing my Sparkplugs ('03 WRX)
Changing my Sparkplugs ('03 WRX)
So, it turns out the CEL/misfire codes I've been getting recently could be due to either bag plugs or a bad coil over pack. Thanks to Mike @ GST, I now have an extra COP I can swap in to what I suspect is the faulty cylinder - just need to get some plugs.
The thing is, I've never actually changed the plugs on my car before - I've always just taken it to a shop to have done. It always seemed like a lot of trouble, but I figure now is as good a time as any to learn. So, I've read a few online tutorials on how it should be done, what tools are required, etc.
My question is: Do I need a flex spark-plug socket? I do have a flex joint, a wobble, and the regular spark plug socket, in addition to extensions, etc. It seems some think that the flex spark-plug socket is mandatory, while others disagree?

the price of the flex spark-plug socket is negligible compared to the headache u may have to endure if you don't get it. if you plan on having a subaru for awhile and u do your own tuneups, i think its worth it, but others might disagree. I however do all the work on my own car so take it for what its worth... best of luck.

get this:

It makes changing the plugs 10x easier. Just need this socket and a 3/8" drive ratchet.

Flex joint socket is not necessary, but would help a bit. I did mine using a spark plug socket, socket extensions and a ratchet (and a breaker bar when you can't reach your hands in there).
What would make the job easier is taking out the surrounding parts. I know the airbox and battery are musts, but the air pump is optional.

unnecessary, regular set of tools will do

How is that different than a standard spark plug socket stuck on an extension? I thought the issue was getting the socket into the tight space, requiring use of a swivel of some kind, not reaching deep down inside to actually get at the plug? Am I misunderstanding something here?
if you're broke but have tools then have at it. if you can spare $5 and are clopse to a HF store I suggest the socket.
you're right a regular set will do. The longer socket makes the job much easier as you don't need 1-2 extensions. everyone has a preference. If there is a tool that makes a job easier + save you time, and it's inexpensive it's worth having in my opinion.
