Can't remove the old patch to do a 'clean patch'?

It was late at night when i found a nail in my tire. Rob helped me patched it with this...

http://shop.oreillyauto.com/productd...egoryCode=3190

Then within a week I go ANOTHER nail in the tire, but this time was just the surface, no need for patch. Went into Discount Tire Co. for the fix, found out no need to fix, but they said my patch will fail VERY soon. I asked them if they could just take out the old patch and re-patch it. They said no, the moment they take it out it will "DESTROY" the tire.

Kept on asking of if I want to order new tires etc...

BS?

They need to infest my machine with their cookies for me to look at what the oreilly part you and Rob used was, was it one of the plug kits or an actual patch?

Removing a patch and replacing it is never a good idea, the scuffing and secondary vulcanization leaves you with pretty much nothing to adhere a second patch to, so I probably wouldn't even try.

Damaged tires can usually get you farther than you'd expect but failed tires get you nowhere, so I'd bite the bullet and get it replaced.

Of all the things to be a cheap *** about spending $ on, I find it funny that people always pick tires for some reason.

Edit: I used to work at a tire shop. What the guy told the OP was not BS. Never a good idea to rip out a patch and patch it again.

Victor / Monkey Grip Tubeless Tire Repair Kit: Heavy Duty Style

Yeah... if i didn't just recently opened a shop, I would get new tires in a heart beat...

I feel like it's BS because the guy has been trying to get me to buy new tires BEFORE he even looked at it.

What he told you is not BS. It may not "DESTROY" the tire, but it'll damage it even more, and increase the risk of a blow out, so most tire companies won't touch it due to liability reasons. Your steel cords are probably already damaged, dirty, starting to rust, etc because of that plug. Those plugs allow all this stuff to occur to steel belts, and most of the time they're installed wrong anyway causing further damage than just the original puncture.

Do you and your car a favor and get a new tire. Saving the $ is not worth your life.

If the tires have plenty of meat and you're low on money, buy 1 tire and get it shaved to the same tread depth of your other tires. I don't know what's around San Jose, but there's a place in Castro Valley that does it. I've used them before for my family's forester with good results.

+1. Tires and brakes, probably the most important yet one of the most neglected or cheaped out on.

haha... i know... all those that i know use the plug did not/have not have any problem with it until the tire's end of life. I myself had it on two different cars and tires and both ran until the tire's end of life...

it just weird that they keep on insisting that it would destroy the tire by removing it and that the plug will fail VERY quickly... they were so nice to me when i got there and when I told them the problem... Then they found out the piece of metal i went in for was just on the surface and nothing else was wrong with the tire other then that plug. they were bit 'disappointed' and the attitude was very different immediately after that... LOL! man, you have to be there to know why I feel like they were feeding me some BS (and try to sell me some tires)...

Thanks for all the feedback folks, learn something everyday...

In my opinion, they wanted to make a sale, but they were doing it with correct information.

Like everyone's said patching a tire again is probably a bad idea, I know we all share the pain of having to get a tire shaved or replacing all of them, ugh.

As far as the plug failing, I can't say I've ever had a plug fail on me. I had a brand new set of yokahama S-drives on my 98' L that got a nail in them and the tires lasted me a full 40k until they were worn and I never had a problem with it again.
