yeah ive been looking at 40D or 20D...30D is pretty much a 20D so no point in buying a 30D...i got to play with my aunts 5D a year ago before i even knew the stats on it...man that thing was fun...like a telescope in a box!
"whats that on top of the mtn...(in Shasta)....takes picture...wow that little spot on the summit turned out to be a 60'x60' fire lookout station!"
40D because of the metal body and 6.5 FPS 5D only has 3 FPS but makes up in qualitayyy

Hey there. Have you tried the D50? I've narrow it down to the D40 and the D50. I'm trying to get some opinions from folks that have tried both, but I mean, since you got the D40, I would like your opinion on it too. Oh also, have you tried the Canon's XT? I'm just trying to know how the folks feel when they hold these cameras. Yeah, I know lense is the main thing to worry about. But, I also look into the feel of the camera. I've tried the Canon Powershot, and it was way too small for my liking. I was thinking about either the D40 or the Rebel XT, but after looking at side by side pics of the body of both, I've then decided to take the XT off the list, and while I was doing that, I saw the D50...anyone wanna chime in on this?
oh and since I'll be getting either the D40 kit or the D50 kit, I'll be using the 18-55mm lense, so the picture quality will be very close to eachother

- Inexpensive (craig's list, ebay, etc.)
- Wider options for autofocus lenses
- Top side LCD screen display (DOF view also?)
D40 Pros:
- Slightly lighter/smaller (smaller camera bags, easy to hold up for long periods, etc.)
- Larger screen (2.5")
- Easier menu system
- Very good battery life
I got the D40 because it was new and I knew Nikon was going to phase out the D50. At the time I was an absolute SLR n00b and didn't know much about the D50 anyway.
I originally wanted a Rebel XT or XT1, but I didn't like the feel or the controls when holding it in the store. Picked up the D40 next. With hardly any experience with a dSLR it still felt very intuitive. And I don't have the biggest hands so the small size added to the super user freindly menu won me over immediately. I was exactly the demographic Nikon was looking for with the D40, go figure. For a brand new dSLR, it's tough to beat the D40 for the price.
D40 cons:
- Smaller and more expensive lens selection for auto focus lense (the 18-200 VR is still worth it)
- 2.5 frames per second is blah
- Need to use the view finder or rear screen to see critical data (shutter speed, aperture, wb, metering, etc.)
- Not compatible with Nikon's Speedlight system (multiple SB-600 or SB-800 flashes (not a big disappointment for begginers)
- Only 3 focus brackets (that can get annoying every now and then)
All things considered, I love the camera. It's sturdy, small, and has all the functions I need as a casual photographer. My next would probably be the D200 or whatever it's replacement will be. But for now, the D40 gets it done.
D40 or D50, I don't think you can go wrong with either one. Both camera bodies do a terrific job for people who can't afford the big boy toys. Besides, what's just as important as the right camera body are the right lenses. A few good lenses can empty out your bank account in no time.
Good luck with your choice!

Dude, thanks alot for replying to this, after I posted that comment, I've come to a conclusion I want the D50, and then my friend (who's a photographer) told me to go with the D40 instead, afterall the reasons why I want the D50 instead.
