Not exactly.

Olympus has a 50mm f/2 and a 35mm f/3.5 for the 4/3 mount.

Sigma has a 30mm f/1.4 in 4/3

F Olympus, Their master plan every year is to try and make their customers buy their crap, be forced to buy stuff that they make that only works with their crap, then their crap gets obsolete within a year or two and they expect you to buy more olympus crap.

Nothing against Olympus quality or picture quality, just a crappy system they have going for them.

Remeber flash wafer media memory cards that they dont make anymore?! haha thats my point. Now theyre onto XD which will be on its way out too.

This seems like a bit much for s Sigma lens but,

- 18mm-200m is a great all around range for casual photography and will virtually (not completely) obsolete your kit lens
- It's got Image Stabilization which is a huge help, I rarely use a tripod with my Nikon VR lens

Later on you can think of adding a good 105mm macro lens (or similar) or possible a 12mm super wide angle for landscapes and whatnot.

Hope that was helpful advise coming from another novis photographer.
- It's right in your price range

See, I'm the same way. If it doesn't say Canon, then I don't want it. But I'm sure Canon gets some of their stuff from other vendors and rebrands it...

^ yeah, all the Canons i try with their 18-55 or 28-55 base lens, it feels like it will fall apart at any second.

i want an XTi, but might get a D80 just because i think Nikons have a better lens range. like 18-200 or even the 18-135 i had. the Canons start at 28, which isnt wide enough for everyday use.

if i had money though, i think Canons would be a better choice for lens. and it seems like theyre harder to find on Craigslist too.

otherwise i have no reason to like one brand more than the other

I don't think I'll be buying any 3rd party lenses either. Not that there's anything wrong with them, but from what I've heard, most Nikkor lenses just have better build/quality than the Sigmas and Tamrons.

I think if you can't afford the Nikon or Canon glass there's nothing wrong with going with a popular 3rd party lens. There are more than enough photography forums and review websites to look up almost any lens. So just put in your due diligence and research your lens before dropping big $$$ on it.
