Bay area photographers..I need advice

So i'm pretty much a noob to photography and i'm slowly learning everything. I purchased the canon rebel XTi kit a few months ago and so far so good. I heard that the ef-s 18-55 lens that it came with is not that good, I think its ok. what would be a good lens to look into?

it all depends on what you want to do, close-up, regular distance, long distance, low light, decent light, in doors, studio, etc.

What direction do you want to go with your photography?

see, that's the great thing about SLRs...

swap for the need.

close ups, you need a good primary lens...

distance... 100-200 should do.

best bet is browse sites like PBASE and look at some of the photos there.

then you can read the EXIF info and see what kind of lens they used.

I'm also a photog noob. I decided that I wouldn't buy anymore lenses until I could make some amazing pictures with my 14-54mm (Olympus). Sadly, there is no prime for the Olympus 4/3 system.

I just got a Cannon G9 an upgrade from the SD700IS. I'm on the steep part of the learning curve - having fun trying different shots and settings.

$400-$599 - http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/cont...+%3C%3D+599.99

I'd try and find a nice f/4 or f/4-5.6 lens if you're going to be doing outdoors

*EDIT* Made custom URL for price range

17-85mm is what came with my 20D..its tied me over for some pretty decent shots...i've shot it at a tons of car shows, in japan, mt.hammy events, but you'll find the limitations of the f4-5.6...its a good starter lens...your 18-55mm isnt that bad either..
....if you had extra cash i'd say spend for either 16-35mm f2.8/L or the 24-70mm f2.8/L...the glass in the L series lenses really produce an awesome picture, but you will pay a pretty change for them

el oh el...

but what do you need f1 for...that's my point here. I'm getting f/2.8L because I'm gonna be doing some night shots, during the day, f4-f/3.5 should be fine for the average photographer.
