My wife got one for free from work. It's an amazing device, great user interface. Some of the functionality seemed a little too locked into specific Apple applications though, I'm not sure how that works if you have Windows. I would pay for one if AT&T wasn't the carrier -- nearly all the downsides I've heard about involve AT&T, if I could get the iPhone with just about any other carrier I would. I know one person who has gotten something like $1500 of data charges because AT&T thinks she still has the RAZR she had before the iPhone and they keep charging her for her old rate plan instead of the iPhone plan. She has spent hours trying to get AT&T to fix it. And whatever you do don't take one outside the US, AT&T will charge you thousands even if you never make a call (again for data charges, just from the phone checking email while it's in your pocket).

I was really thinking about getting the Iphone...then I saw how much they wanted for it. I really think apple/att got greedy on this one. They're going to make thier money on the monthly usage plans. That's why in general phone, especially for new subscribers, are cheap. But Apple, being Apple, is charging an arm and a leg for a device that should cost hundreds less.
I still might have gotten one if it had 3G, GPS, and a hell of a lot more storage. Seriously, what device doesn't have 3G and GPS now? Come on Apple, time to catch up. Really cool interface and design, just lacking in features.

i am a nokia fan, been using nokia a lot (the 3 series, 6 series, 7 series, 8 series and n-series). i know, i am a cell-phone *****. hehehe. change it almost every 6 to 12 months. love them though. what can i say i am a typical southeast asian that likes to change cellphones. hehehhe. :P
this is the first time i am using a cellphone brand other than nokia.
kind of regret buying the iphone because.
1. need to unlocked it
2. cannot send pictures messege
3. cannot use bluetooth to listen to the mp3
4. no video
5. no camera with good lense (carl-zeiss optic) that can zoom, auto focus, flash, different kind of photo style, etc.
6. no external memory card that can be upgraded
7. only 8GB of internal memory
8. integrated radio (well have the ipod but it is good to have one)
9. need to hack it to get extra stuffs (chatting, personalized ringtones, games, voice recorder, etc)
10. still says design by apple not made by apple
well, i am gonna wait 'till nokia comes out with a new smaller flip phone with 5 megapixels camera.

RE: iPhone
I have been debating whether or not to get one myself. My big issue is the fact that the battery is internal (not replaceable, not without some major work on the phone anyway). The average life for an iPod/cell phone battery is 2-3 years with normal use. So therefore, you are almost gauranteed to have to buy another one in 2-3 years, whereas with your average cell phone you can just get a new battery and often times you can find a new one with a higher capacity than OEM. I have a RAZR right now and don't have any complaints. I really don't need to be on the internet every where I go, and I already have an iPod, so I think it would just be a waste for me. However, I am your typical tech-junkie. I love gadgets (Bond...James Bond). I wouldn't get it for the show factor. Most of the time I throw my phone in my pocket and it stays there all day until I get a call. I can't stand the younger crowd who flash them around like it's the holy grail or something. I almost refuse to go to the movie theaters anymore unless it's a weekday and they are near empty. I get severe rage when someone's phone starts making noise in the middle of a movie. I start out homicidal, and then get genocidal. I was thrown out of a theater once for picking a fight with a teenage @$$hole who wouldn't shut his damn phone off and it kept going off in the middle of the movie. Wow, I got way off topic. ANyway, the battery issue alone will probably keep me from getting one...at the current price anyway. If they ever drop to around $250 or less I might go ahead. I guess I would just ask yourself, "do I really need this thing, do I want to have to buy another one in 2-3 years?" There is nothing wrong with my RAZR so I think I hang on to it for a while longer. Remember, novelty is only temporary. I found that out when I was one of the first people in my town to buy the new body style Mustang (2005, bought in december 2004). Then I started having problems with it. Besides, think of what another $400 toward car mods could do. That's the addiction.

The thing is hard to type on. It's too slow. It's too big. It doesn't have instant messaging. It's too expensive. (Or, no, wait, it's too cheap!) It doesn't support my work e-mail. It's locked to AT&T. Steve Jobs secretly hates puppies. And—all together now—we're sick of hearing about it! Yes, there's been a lot of hype written about the iPhone, and a lot of guff too. So much so that it seems weird to add more, after Danny Fanboy and Bobby McBlogger have had their day. But when that day is over, Apple's iPhone is still the best thing invented this year. Why? Five reasons:

... and I'm with you on the theatre thing. It's even worse when people in front of you decide to text someone and there's a big unavoidable glowing light in the corner of your eye from the display on the phone. I get the urge to kill.
Turns out I have no use for an iPhone now since everyone at work was given Treo 700 and 750. Can't use the iPhone to check work email or our inventory system. Too bad they have Windows Mobile on it though. Not a big fan of that and I hear the Palm OS is much better.

no regrets at all
cuz, after MUCH deliberation, i went w/the AT&T TILT instead of the iPhone.
seriously, i really wanted the iPhone because, yes, it just looks+feels cool as hell. but after the trendwhore in me subsided, i realized i just wouldn't be able to live w/the touchscreen keyboard for data input/texting. honestly, i don't text much at all (i actually HATE texts & IMs), but for email, adding phone #'s, addresses, etc, the touchscreen is just too much of a pain in the a$#. i'm a tactile person and highly prefer real QWERTY keypads.
additionally, gotta love the TILT's 3G & Windows Mobile capability.
but, again, no denying the sleek+trick aesthetics of the iPhone. it has a really nice+BIG screen too. maybe i'll think about getting one for kicks & giggles when the rumored 3g version comes out at the end of year.

theres a few things I don't like about my iPhone. One of them being that text boxes, such as the quick reply boxes on here, you can't scroll in them, and when you hold your finger on the text to get the little magnification bubble to move the cursor, if its at the top of the screen, the bubble goes off the screen rather than moving someplace else that is visible
Saw this today on Gizmodo:
$59 on top of the regular calling plan from AT&T to have 50 megabyte data plan

i gotta agree i still like my treo 700p better than my iphone.
but mainly because of the physical keypad. everything on screen can get annoying sometimes.
