Any ex-cyclist or bike mechanics?
Hey Bay Area folks,
I recently got obsessed with vintage bikes/biking and was wondering if anyone has old tools, repair stands, even bikes laying around they want to get rid of for cheap. I realized working without a stand is really tough, I prop my bike up next to my stack of old RE070's and it's a hassle to work on my bike. Luckily most automotive tool sets come with sizes that fit but would like a few cone wrench and specialty tools. Just wanted to try I-club first before I try to find cheap one on ebay. Thanks everyone.
Here's a couple of my bikes for your viewing pleasure. I'm trying to fix up the Voyageur at this moment.

The last bike I saved from the dumpster that I rode for class, but the wheels recently got knocked untrue so I'm gonna see if I can fix that too.
Thanks for reading.
Mike

Nice!
Cone wrenches get at Performance on sale. Like $15 IIRC. I don't have anything I'm getting rid of, sorry.
Looks like all those cranks are cotterless... you're lucky.
I have an old Raleigh that has proprietary EVERYTHING and is such a huge pain in the *** to work on.

Hey Ryan, I have too many bikes as it is, not pictured I also have Univega and another Scwhinn Traveler, plus my crappy Walmart mountain bike would make it 6 bikes =(.
Yeah, if I can't find any used tools, I'm gonna have to hit up eBay or Performance. Those repair stands are quite pricey.
And fixed gear? hell yes! I'm contemplating turning the Univega into a fixed or single speed..not sure which yet. It'll be a fun project, I'm thinking about repainting it, and putting an i-club decal on the downtube? That would look sick, lol.

this is ghetto, but a cheap way to get around a repair stand is to hang your bike from a tree using old (or even new) bike innertubes looped around branches and your handlebar + saddle. I've never tried this myself but I've seen it done before
I've been wrenching my own bikes (including complete builds) for the past 15+ years and have gotten by without one. Granted, a repair stand would make things go a lot faster... Have you checked craigslist?

I've found that it is also easy to just turn the bike upside down and let the handlebars and saddle balance the bike. This works for changing the tires and maybe doing stuff with the crankset.
Fixed gear bikes are definitely fun, but also dangerous if you don't have a front brake at least or know how to stop. I converted an old Univega Custom Maxima into a fixie and I am now going to swap everything onto a track frame.

Yeah, thats what I did but I don't like putting pressure on the brake cables and I'm planning on putting a mint condition Brooks B17 on there so don't wanna mess w/ the seats either. And it's really easy to fall over. I'm having the hardest time pulling the trigger on a repair stand. I found one on ebay for 146 dollars but that is so expensive, more than my most expensive bike! I thought about getting a park tool PCS-9 but have read ok reviews on it. I'm thinking if I get a stand might as well get a good quality one that will last me a while. Sigh. What to doooo.

Damn, and I thought having 3 bikes was rough!
Cotterless cranks on vintage bikes FTW!
I found a 1970's "paris sport" roadie in the parking lot of my apartment complex back in college with a sign on it that said "free or junk." All it needed was tires and some bar grip tape. Unfortunately for me, it had cottered cranks... A local (in PA) bike shop found me a BB spindle that was exactly the same size but made for cotterless cranks, and sourced a used crankset, for a grand total of 15 dollars installed!
Between tubes, tires, tape, and crankset I paid about 60 bucks, and I think it was worth it. It gives me something less flashy than my newer Trek to ride around in Philadelphia.
