Help, ANy Subaru Techs Or Any Mechanics P0442
Ok, so I posted this up on NASIOC also just to get the most help I can.
OK, I just picked up an bone stock 06 TR with about 27K on the clock. After driving it for a week I my CEL came on, I scanned the code and got P0442. Checked my gas cap and it was tight but I still took it off and retightened it. I cleared the code using my scanner and after driving a few more times the CEL came back with the same code P0442. So far I replaced the gas cap with another brand new OEM Subaru cap. I have a copy of the 06 FSM and I am using the trouble chart EN(H4DOTC)(diag)214. So next it told me to check the fuel fill seal and it looked ok. I then checked the Purge Control Valve located below the alternator. All the lines were connected and none of them had any leaks. I took it out and used some jumper wire to hook the valve to a 12V source. The valve worked as it should and the air went through when the valve was hooked up to power. The next step was to check the Pressure Control Valve that is located on top of the Evap cannister. I got the valve out and did exactly what I did for the first valve but Im not sure on my results. Ive added a pic that would help out what Im trying to find out.
With no electrical power hooked up air goes from port 1 to port 2 and no air comes out of port 3. I believe this is what should happen when the valve is not actuated by 12 volts.
Now with electrical power hooked up air still goes from port 1 to port 2. Shouldnt air now go to port 3? I hear a small click so I know the valve is getting power when I jump it but shouldnt the air swap ports after its actuated?. Can someone please help me out as I dont want to spend about $125 on a valve that is not bad. Thanks

when you tighten the gas cap are you just turning it till it clicks or going a few turns after it clicks? this code is common and a lot of times its the gas cap. i always turn mine at least a half turn after it starts to click after having this problem. if that doesn't fix it then you have a small evap system leak and you're gonna have a fun time trying to find it. Was throwing a p0442 every month or so for the last 5 months (evap system small leak) on my 2004 STi. Wasn't my fuel cap. Friday I used a smoker to attempt to find the leak in the system. Tapped in at the secondary purge valve coming off the intake. A few seconds in and smoke was pouring out from below. Turns out one of the nipples had broken off of my Evap purge valve (primary). I have included a pic below.

I just fixed my P0442 CEL today on my 07 sti.
I used a smoker at work and didnt see any smoke coming out from anywhere. Tested the gas cap and that was fine. I doubt this is a normal problem, but my cause was a bad gasket for the fuel pump...funny because i've never opened that cover before lol. I pressurized the tank and heard a hissing sound and so I sprayed some soap water and saw bubbles coming up through the threads....i just unbolted the cover, cleaned the surfaces and bolted it back up; no more leak!

Its either a leak somewhere or a bad valve in the EVAP system, Sam. A smoke test might find it. If the car is under warranty, give it a shot. Unless you have a smoke machine. I'd do it for you but it'll kill my lungs.
