You should always have rainy day and retirement funds. Just find a balance point that works for you and if you do like the City lifestyle, may be make it a future goal.

Btw here is another side point to consider; it recently prevented 2 people from my company from relocating to San Francisco from East Coast. If you own or enjoy firearms, San Francisco proper is not a good place as it is as progressive and draconian as it gets. Enforcement of the anti-gun laws vary by neighborhood, but it is a headache all around.
