Strange 07 WRX issue

Hey guys, I've encountered an interesting issue with my car lately. (within the last 3 days) I purchased it 2 months ago (used) from the dealership, and had it evaluated at LIC. The car is fine, and other than the K&N intake that was on it when I picked it up, the engine is stock.

Let me preface to say that I'm planning to replace the intake with an OEM air-box regardless if it's the issue or not.

Basically I noticed this problem the other day while heading back North on 101 towards the GG bridge. It was pretty bad traffic and everything was at a slow crawl/ stop n go. At the point of incline, while keeping it in 1st gear, the car would start rumbling and struggle to pull cleanly up hill. After about 50 meters of trying to keep the car from dieing I started to smell the clutch burning.
My first thought was that the clutch was slipping and could be going bad. After reading around, it seems to me that the clutch isn't the problem. (it doesn't display the typical slipping clutch symptoms)

Is this just turbo lag, or is it an early sign of the engine running lean? I'm scrambling to figure this out before it's too late.

Any suggestions?

It wouldnt be in turbo lag unless ur in boost, most definitely not at a slow/stopped position.

You shouldn't be able to feel a lean/rich difference from just a intake, maby from a downpipe.

It might still be the clutch or tranny go get it checked out

Ok well, I've already started the process to have it checked out.
I'll post up the results after I get it back..
Thanks for the input!
