View Full Version : FLI 06 STI built GT30 Legacy reverse intake manifold and more...
FLIWRX 10-25-2007, 04:59 PM http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a388/FLIWRX/banner_top.gif
A few months ago we had a customer come to upgrade from his FP green to a garrett GT30. With the customer already having the APS 3.5in turbo back and the APS Header and not wanting to get rid of them we set out to modify his existing up-pipe and down-pipe to accommodate the GT30. Along the way the project snowballed a little into what your have before you today.
Engine:
FLI Stage 3 closed deck block.

First step take engine out of the car.
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a388/FLIWRX/emptyenginebay.jpg
Next step assembling the FLI stage 3 closed deck block.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a388/FLIWRX/FLIBLOCKNASIOC2.jpg
Fully assembled long block with the FLI stage 3 cylinder heads. These heads use 1mm oversize intake and exhaust valves and a good amount of port work. If anyone is interested I have flow bench number of these vs COBB heads and version 7 STI

Next up was modifying the APS up-pipe for the 4 bolt Garrett flange needed for the GT30. This was a pretty simple process that involved welding a section of pipe with the proper flange onto the existing up-pipe then fabbing a new support bracket for the GT30

Here are a few more pictures with the Legacy intake manifold on it. This was a pretty straightforward mod it just required the Legacy throttle body as well as the manifold.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a388/FLIWRX/FinalmockupC.jpg
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a388/FLIWRX/FinalmockupB.jpg
Next up on our list is finishing the waste gate dump-tube and how the waste gate mounts to the up-pipe. After that its pretty much all down hill and the car will be ready for final assembly and the brake in tune. Ill post back with more pictures as the project wraps up. If anyone has any questions or comments they are always welcome.

FLIWRX 05-13-2008, 11:40 AM A small update on this project. The intercooler pipes came back from being powder coated and the down-pipe and up-pipe had the final welding done and were wrapped. This is the final mock up of all the piping before we move it into the STI for the final time. Hopefully some time next week we will be braking the car in and getting ready for the dyno.

FLIWRX 05-13-2008, 11:42 AM This was a long project but well worth the wait. We went with a GT35R turbo because the GT30R ran out of air :D, which I guess is a good thing right? The car will be back in a month or so for the race fuel tune and the Hydra 2.6 upgrade (now he is running the Hydra 2.5). The customer wanted to re unite with his baby before a massive power increase. This STI actually broke our 91 Octane record by 37 hp to the wheels. Max boost is set at 22 psi tapering to 21 psi.
Also, take note of the difference between the FLI reverse Legacy plastic intake manifold set up (which did not get hotter then 80 degrees) and the standard mount GT35R front mount intercooler set up that held the previous 91 Octane record on FLI's Mustang dyno. This car made 300 ft. of torque at the wheels at 3450 rpm vs. 3850 rpm.
Notes from dyno graph: Temp in room is 63 degrees with 42% humidity, IAT is 60 degrees and max boost of 22 psi.

VRT MBasile 05-13-2008, 01:13 PM what's the benefit of using the legacy manifold?
FLIWRX 05-13-2008, 01:31 PM what's the benefit of using the legacy manifold?
Without loosing the AC its the only way to do a revers intake manifold. Another up side are the lower intake manifold temps. Usually the metal intake manifold after running on the dyno for a while are in the 140 deg temp range.

Paul@dbtuned 05-13-2008, 01:31 PM what's the benefit of using the legacy manifold?
I'm guessing lower intake temps due to lower thermal mass transfering heat into the manifold.
Ooops...Ryan answered already!
Plus...it's sexay as hell.
luktang 06-20-2008, 05:38 PM How much modification did you guys do on the reverse legacy manifold??
sigma pi 06-23-2008, 11:41 AM can you use the stock cable throtle body if you put this on an 03 wrx?
luktang 06-25-2008, 05:11 PM That's a good point. I just notice the difference between WRX and the STi.
FLIWRX 07-02-2008, 05:20 PM can you use the stock cable throtle body if you put this on an 03 wrx?
No you cant at the moment. But if you are going to run a rotated mount turbo setup you can go with the factory 03 WRX manifold so when you reverse it you can make the IC pipes even shorter.

FLIWRX 07-02-2008, 05:22 PM How much modification did you guys do on the reverse legacy manifold??
On the actual manifold itself not a whole lot. You do need to use however a Legacy GT throttle body instead of the STI one though.

So where would you re-route the throttle body cable then? If I'm just using a VF series or 20G turbo upgrade then can I still do the reverse manifold setup? Do you guys fabricate/sell reverse manifolds? Sorry for all the questions.

i can field this one
yes tehy sell tehm
no they dont fabricate the manifold
they could but subaru makes it
you can turn it around but the hard part is making everything work
vaccume lines IC piping ecte ect
so group buy you and i!

For our shop car and a few other customers cars we did make a reverse manifold set up for the stock location turbo. Here are to examples of non legacy reverse intake manifolds. The blue car is my old car and the silver car is our shop track car.

FLIWRX 07-03-2008, 01:00 PM I would love to have a jig setup for this but I would say we have only done seven of these setups over the past two years and all of them were a little different. While Im sure we could mock it up on the engines and cars we have here to have it fit 100 percent right like we want them to fit the car would have to be here or you would have to be willing to fiddle with it a little bit yourself.

dunnojack 07-03-2008, 05:57 PM btw... FLI is in nor-cal....
luktang 07-03-2008, 06:02 PM Hahaha... I'm in Hawaii so Nor Cal, So Cal... same distance to me.
dunnojack 07-03-2008, 06:06 PM lol why dont you figure out what you wanna do, have them fab it and take pics of installation instructions, and do it yourself?

we sure can it would be great if we could do it on a the car though. Fabing from a distance does not always work out the way it should on something custom.
