Im having an issue with my 05 STI. Recently i replaced my VF39 turbo that had a crack on the exaust side of the turbo. The car was burning oil because of the crack in the turbo so i replaced it with a vf22 which i thought would stop the oil burning/consumption. But im 3000 miles into my vf22 and im still loosing oil (roughly 1300 miles and im bone dry.). I noticed when i get on boost i can see a small amount of smoke comming from my exaust. Any one have any ideas of what could also be causing me to loose oil at a rapid rate? Before the turbo swap (1month before) we did a compression/leak down test on the motor and it came back all good so i know its not a crack in the block. Could it be head gasket or seal rings? Im also not experiencing any random leaks or drip spots so thats whats making it so confusing. Any ideas anyone? Id greatly appreciate it, its really driving me nuts.

Thanks,

Stephen

Hi, Stephen

For starters a cracked exhaust housing in the turbo isn't going to cause oil burning. I'd be curious to see what your compression/leakdown #'s were. You can also rule out head gaskets, cracked blocked, etc... I would expect worn rings, damaged pistons or out-of-round cylinders if there was actually something wrong. But driving style can also attribute to some oil loss. When you say bone-dry, how many quarts are you adding? If it's (1) then that's normal oil consumption on an STi.

Thanks for responding Adam, i wish i could reply faster but i dont have an internet connection at my place so i can rarely check posts. Im not sure what my Compression #'s were but according to Mike and Mert at Gruppe-S the said all was good (this was two months before i had the major oil consumption issue). I have a feeling it may be my valve seal rings. I need to have the vehicle leaked down to be sure, but from what im expereincing and what ive told people they agree that its more then likely the case. As for my driving style i wont lie, i do drive it hard every now and then. My car dosent have any major upgrades besides tbe with headers along with vf22 and turbo inlet. The smoke im seeing isnt blue its def. oil burn. Ive spoke to mike w on the issue and went up a weight class in oil from a 5w30 to a 10w30 to see if that slows down or helps but it hasent. I notice heavy burning especially when i get on boost. Would a leak down test reveal a bad or torn vavle seal ring? If so, what do you charge to do a leak down, and est. cost on repair? I know that you have to yank the motor to get to the job. I greatly appreciate the replys, mike always says if there was anyone else who knows subies it would be you adam.

Thanks,
Stephen

I am losing 1 quart of 5w30 Redline every 1,000 miles, but I don't get any type of smoking or visible evidence of leaking. Is it normal to be burning this much?

It's the same '05 STi that you guys de-modded for transmission work. It has had an XEDE with a basemap and TBE. It's been burning this much regardless of oil brand (Mobil 1 10w-30, 5w-30 and Redline 10w-40, 5w-30) for over a year. I have 28,000 miles on it now.

I don't think I have Stephen's issue (my car doesn't smoke) but something seems to be off. Then again, this is my first turbo car so it could be completely normal. I drive it moderately and get about 20-22 mpg or 280 or so miles per tank. I use partial boost often but don't hit max boost more than 10 times a tank.

Ha. :D

Seriously, though, I've been getting 21+ mpg lately. How much boost could I possibly be using? ;)

Thanks for the response.

I agree with you, but its not uncommon for that engine...i.e. Adam drove to LA in his MY04 Forester and burned 1qt going and 1qt coming back. One might say why?

my response: It just is what it is (not very PC but it's true)

Have a good holiday

Im having issues w/ my car burning oil and need to have the valve seals and retainers replaced. I know this will require the motor to be pulled so i figure at that point i might as well replace the water and oil pump along with head gasket. Just looking to see what the costs (i will need all parts) along w/ labor costs.

Thanx
