Per California Smog law, your engine swap must be from the same year as your vehicle, or newer, so that allows lots of possibilities!

Would an LS1 fit in this car? It probably weighs less than our 4 banger. Hehehe, it'd probably liquify the transmission though.

Yes a ls1 can fit into a 3rd Gen RX7 (93-95) there is a company called Granny Motorsports who makes a kit for a LS1 into a rx7. They also make a 350 conversion kit for FBs (79-85 Rx7s) and FCs (86-92 rx7s)

Doesn't the engine also have to come from the same company and the same type? So i couldn't drop a RB26 into a 240sx. or a K20 in an MRS.

ahem - the engine just has to be from the same "family" to be smog legal. That is how C4 Vette guys get away with running 406cid small blocks in place of their 350 L98 motors.
Not to mention that no one is gonna get out the volume tester to check if you have a 2.0 or 2.5

As stated earlier by Group B, any engine swap in a California car must be using an engine of the same model year or newer than the vehicle it is going into, and must retain all smog equipment in operating condition for that year engine or car, whichever is newer. You cannot legally swap a 1970 high-compression 454 LS-6 into a C5 Corvette, nor can you swap in a 2006 Z06 engine into a '63 Stingray unless it retains all functioning emissions controls and factory sensors.

I'm not sure that an engine must be of the same corporate family or not. I thought that almost anything was legal as long as it met the above criteria, including 5.0 liter fuelie Ford V-8s into a Jaguar or Mazda Miata.

I was under the impression that a 60s vette is carb exempt (74 and older) you can do just about anything engine swap wise without worrying about smog equipment.

The 454 LS6 is not the same engine family as an LS1

I was thinking the same thing except 75' and older. Something like a smog legal Z with an RB26DETT

Technically they are not exempt.... but pre-73 cars do not have to do the smog inspection.

Mine sure as hell wouldn't pass

ummmm.... mazda truck + 2002 WRX swap come to mind?

you can swap anything you want. as long as its not TRUCK engine to CAR, BUT you can do CAR motor INTO TRUCK.
