Will 245/40-17s rub on stock susp?
I've heard that the 245s rub with lowered susp... what about stock susp? Since stock susp is higher, would there be more clearance to allow for 245?
You will definately rub when you go over bumps with the stock suspension on a WRX (I'm assuming thats what you're refering to). Only way you can avoid that is to roll your fenders. Really stiff springs can help but it will severly degrade ride quality and you could still rub....

Yes, i am referring to an 03 WRX. What does rolling fenders entail? (sorry not an expert in this area... :P) Is it bending/stretching the fenders to make the tires fit?

You will most definitely rub with 245's on a stock suspension. Fender rolling is when you roll the wheel wells back to make them wider. Ghetto folks use a baseball bat and a towel to do it
What is the offset of the wheels that you plan on mounting these tires to? 235/45's will be 11.4 mm larger in od than factory tires and 235/40's will be 12.1 mm smaller.
Subydude has 245/40/17 on his car but Im sure the suspension is heavily modded. He claims that 235/40/17 will not rub. Here is the link http://www.subydude.com/mods/detailsdoc.php?3053. I have 225/45/17's on rotas with a 48mm offset and my car has a 1.2" drop in the rear with factory struts and the camber was reduced from -1.5 to -1 in the rear to adress understeer. When Im pushing very hard in a corner my rear tires rub the fenders. Im going to go back to -1.5 rear camber and hopefully that will help. If you dont mind the spedo being off since 235/40's will be almost a 1/2" smaller od than stock I would think you wouldnt have a problem with rubbing but then again Im no expert.
The WRX factory camber settings are -.5 front and -1.5 rear which is one of the reasons it tends to understeer. Adding some negative camber to the front will help. When the rear was at -2 (because I didnt have a bolt kit yet) it didnt rub so I'm hopeing it will be ok at -1.5.
