Tire size
Luke-shame on you-I went to Tire Rack's site and typed in a 2006 wrx then selected alternate tires-asked it for 225/50/17's and in just one all season category it gave me a bunch of choices. I run 225/45's on my 07 wrx and it has lots of clearance. A 50 series tire adds about 11mm of height over a 45. I think 25.9 mm is an inch so we're looking at less than a half inch change.

For the OP, go with 225/45/17s on the stock wheels. If you're getting thicker wheels (ie 17x8) a 235/40/17 will fit. Be careful if you go up to a 245/40/17. I just put mine on last week, and noticed that there will be slight rubbing on large bumps and sharp turns if you have a fully loaded car (I had 4 passengers in at the time). My fender lips have not been rolled.
Well first, the problem size difference is less than one half inch as I stated(what sits on the bottom of the tire just raises the car up,whats on the top creates interference problems), second I went back to the Tire Rack site and started increasing the aspect ratio by 5%, and the site kept stating "tires for an 06 Subaru wrx" until I got to a 70 aspect ratio and above where it said no tires available. Now there are tires in that range that exist in that size so it leads me to believe they researched it.If I get the chance I'll call them in the morning. I'm not trying to pick a fight at all I just depend on that site for lots of data and have always found it to be spot on-if it's not in some areas I want to know.

OK, I called Tire Rack and the rep said that even if you selected a car model and then selected optional tires the site would give you those tires if they were available, but there was no guarantee of fitment even though the header said tires for this model. He said 'tires not available' meant there were no tires made in that size. I immediately knew how I'd been fooled and rechecked it this morning. When I got to 70 series tires and the site said 'none available' I checked that size and a xx brand 'geolander' came up. So I figured the site cut it off for fit reasons.
