Question Tire Guru, I got nailed

One of my tires got nailed from the upper outer edge and the nail went through the side wall. Funny thing is, it's not leaking any air. Took it to the tire shop and one guy said it has to be replaced and the next guy said, "I have 5 years experience and it's OK I tell ya". Well I don't believe him (5 year guy). I have a free replacement warranty on it and I guess they don't want to shell out for this one.

The tire is used for autocross and I don't feel confident with it. What's your take?

get new tires. I don't see how a nail in the sidewall can be OK, especially auto-x tires

I think so too. I think I have to take care of this this weekend then. If they don't shell out, I will have them put this on paper.

Nail through the sidewall = dead tire
The internal patch will not retain the seal on the sidewall safely (I'd only do it in extreame - temporary cases). And don't even accept an external plug style reapir in the sidwall.
I have a hard time believing that this 5 year guy would accept the responsibility of his suggested repair.

Screw his 5 years.......I have more than that

I couldn't accept the explanation either. They didn't patch it either. So I think something will accidentally puncture the same area tomorrow.

Thanks for the input Luke. I brought it back to the store and they kept to their story that it should not be a problem. It may be the last time I ever buy tires from there.

Can you get Hankook RS-2's? I may have to order one.

sorry ... we do not have that tire ....

is the nail actually going through the tire or did it just clip the corner of the tread block ???

Like you said, I think it should accidentally puncture the same area and cause it to start leaking.

It's hard to do it. I am too square I guess, but I may have to or just pay for a new one.
