For everyone:

I was working in the vinyard yesterday, pulling leaves and tying up canes for six hours or so, and thinking about my tire delema. And what do I have to show for all this meditation? A SONG, of course...

"Down to the Wear-Bars Again"
(Sung as an Irish-style folk song)

I was up on Mtn Charlie, with the redwoods in my eyes,
When I shifted down and pitched into a turn.
And the total lack of traction came as much to my surprise,
When I found I had no rubber left to burn.

Down to the wear-bars again.
Down to the wear-bars again.
I can't afford to meet you up on Hamilton, my friend,
as I'm down to the wear-bars again.

This Summer, I'll be headin', with my atlas and me 'gel
To where the Modoc meets the Basin and the Range.
We'll be hittin' up the back roads, we'll be raisin' dusty hell,
But before we go, I've got to make a change.

Down to the wear-bars again.
Down to the wear-bars again.
The gravel's gettin' slippery, as the rubber's gettin' thin,
and I'm down to the wear-bars again.

Some people lust for horses, with an up-pipe and a down,
And a turbocharger bigger than their brains.
But if ye dinnae have it happening where the rubber meets the ground,
And ye drive like me, yer bloody well insane.

Down to the wear-bars again.
Down to the wear-bars again.
I'm hopin' for some traction, but all I do is spin,
Cause I'm down to the wear-bars again.

someone shoot me,
Mike

BFG KDWS's.

Good wear, good stiff sidewall, reasonable street grip (I've taken them to the track),
really good dirt grip (I've rallycrossed them ), slightly noisy.

I'm on my second set. They are superior to the Dunlop SP A2's, IMHO - I had some of those on prior to the KDWS's.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'm checking them out now on tirerack, and they look good. Any idea if they are bi-directional? I can't seem to figure out where to find that spec...

WRX ish; same question about the SP A2s. (or about tire specs in general...)

Thanks for the various forms of help, y'all,
Mike

I'm wondering how many miles I could get out of a set of hard compoound michelin gravel tires with the hard compound...? I might have to put a set on and see how they ride on the street. http://subesports.com/products/?cart...lly&prodID=829

Little pricey though.

its going to come down to how hard you are driving on what kind of surfaces and what temperatures.

Top pro rally drivers cook a set in about 30-50 miles of racing, sometimes less.

I've had mine for a year, I generally try to avoid doing long transits (>70 miles or so) on pavement, and my gravel driving is typically pretty mild by pro rally standards, but aggressive by most any other measure.

So I've probably got about 1000 to 1500, maybe even as much as 2000 miles on them so far, and I expect I'll get about twice that much more before I need to toss them, but the inner tread blocks are losing their shallow indentations already.

But I have to say, even at that price I've been very glad to have them in several situations, they can put up with things that would shred just about any street tire- they buy you about a half inch more ground clearance too, so I'll probably always keep a set handy.

and as for their ride on the street, try to imagine the stiffness of a low profile 17" combined with the constant rumble of a truck tire, and you'll be close......

Great post... thanks Pete. I think those are my next set of tires for my stockers. I cant seem to get enough wear on my snowtrackers to throw em out yet! These things have like 15-20k on them with lots of rediculous pavement sliding and they still have tons of tread! I need to get off the beaten path more I guess. In a month or so I'll take a look back here and maybe a few of us can head up to my cabin in Pioneer. It's aboutn 20 min from eldorado nat. forest.

Hmmm, I might be on to something here,

Ash

Hey all,

Just bringing this back from the dead to say that I went with the KDWSs.

Thanks, ash, for your offer to let me try out the snowtires, but the more I thought about it, the more I thought that they wouldn't be the thing. I don't ski.

Road trip next week! I'll let you all know how they do.

It's ok. I've been obsessed with the WRX since my freshmen year. I used to have serious nightmares about driving a Hyundai Piece and getting into an accident and my girlfriend breaking up with me bcs of that (and my small pee-pee ) Thank the lord I'm getting one soon. and surgery.

They did REALLY FREAKIN' WELL.

On everything from powdery dry clay to mid sized gravel, they did extremely well for a street tire. I slid around like hell on the course gravels, of course, but you'd need a big truck tire not to.

I abused the sorry hell out of these things on some very rocky roads and they took it graciously.

Didn't do any snow, or much wet, but they do dry dirt quite well.

Liked 'em.

Glad you liked them. They're not as good as some other M+S tires in the snow, but much better for almost everything else. They're ok in the snow, just not great. I run Z-chains in the fronts when it gets really icy and haven't had any problems.
