Compund R?
Falken Azenis Sports are not a R compund tire.
They do suck in the rain. They have a stiff sidewall and many people like them for autocross. I tried these on the track w/ my STI. I was not impressed. They slide decent when you want to drift, not my choice of tire thought. They also track/tramline grooves in the road pretty bad.
For a price match, I prefer the Kumho Ecsta MX, otherwise the RA-1's rock on the track. I am running S03's right now for the street, but these will be replaced with Kumho's when they wear, for cost/wear reasons.

I drove Azenis on an 01 RS for 14 track days and 13k miles including 2 rain days. The car was then sold and I sold the wheels/tires to another track junkie who used them as his rain tires. I also ran back to back sessions with those warn Azenis and with equally warn RE-92's as a comparison. The RE-92's scared the crap out of me and the Azenis calmed me back down and finished the rainy day just fine.
If you are looking for absolute best autocross performance, regardless of wear/cost, the Hoosiers are the only tire for you. "A"s for autocross and "R"s for track and autocross. Don't drive either on the street.....or any other R compound for that matter. They pick up and keep screws and nails very nicely (been there, done that)
If you want a streetable tire that won't be trashed with track/autocross use, Azenis is your best choice. Cheaper than S03's and won't destroy themselves like Kumho MX's. Rotate them often changing both side of the car and direction of travel and they'll last a good long time.
If you want a track tire that'll last longer than the Hoosiers (which is just about anything...) I've had good luck with Yokos, Kumhos and friends have good things to say about Toyo.

Staff member Egan has run several sets on his WRX wagon and then his STi. I think he's on A032Rs now, maybe he'll chime in with his comparisons of the two. For what it's worth, the Pilot Sport Cups are not really street tires- the only cars in the world that come with them are the M3 CSL, and Porsche 911 GT3.
Maybe a couple other versions of seriously high performance german cars, but you get the point... they're track candy. I would suggest sticking to S03s, Pilot Sport 2s, or Kumho MX unless your tire budget is larger than what the rest of uspay every month for our cars, and possibly insurance.

Two guys with STi's I met at Watkins Glen have tried PS2's and neither was happy with the increased sidewall flex v. the stock RE070's. In fact one of the guys is so impressed with his RE070's in cool spring conditions that he took off his Advan R??'s and immediately lapped at 2-3 seconds quicker with the stock rubber. Yes they will get greasey in the heat, but that's pretty impressive stuff. MX's need lots of pressure cause the sidewalls are noodles compared to the RE070's. Beware tires that need lots of pressure cause you're compensating for sidewall flex. I definitely think the way to go is stock or Toyo Proxes RA1's if most driving is to and from track unless you're really dedicated.
