Ain't that the truth. Time to find some rims for some new winter tires. Because RE070s + snow = No no!

I ran Proxe 4's last year and liked them. Good do it all tire.

I'd like to go blizzak on stock wheels though. Leave em' up at my cabin.

I'd swap the winter tires when going up the mountain then swap them back the NORMAL tires when back in the city... unless I know I'd be heading up again the following week/weekend or so.

It may seems trouble, but it's worth it. Likewise, you wouldn't want to run summer tires in snow, would you?

About All Season/M+S tires... they are ok in light snow, but suck big time in deep snow & ice. They are also not as great in dry/hot weather... that's why All Season/M+S tire is a compromise tire. A friend of mine had M+S tires & spun out because of ice, even w/ AWD!

About summer tires... most people think they are not good in wet... WRONG!!! They are actually MUCH BETTER than All Season/M+S tires in wet. They ONLY suck at temperature below 40 degree F.

you're making all encompassing statements. It's not true that summer tires are MUCH better than all season tires in the rain. Depends on the tire. And most M&S tires include water channels and are as good or better than most summer tires in the rain. Most not all... like I said. Depends on the tire.

As for your friend. I've seen people spin out in 4x4 jeeps with nobbies. Just because you have decent tires doesn't mean you can drive out of YOUR ability and that of your car.

Hell I've driven in the snow in RE070's without any issues. Not smart but I didn't die. The all season tires I ran last year... Toyo Proxe 4's did just fine on dry... not nearly what my RE070's were but I didn't expect that out of them. They RIPPED in the rain. They did just fine on ice.... no tire truly grips on ice without stuts. They did just fine in deep snow as well. It rarely gets deeper than a few inches on the roads anyways.... If you're out in a foot you're an idiot anyways. Or out having fun and its your own fault if you crash or spin.

The best case is to run a nice summer/performance tire and a dedicated winter set. Change them out.

But for most people the right M&S all season tire is just fine. Pzero, Proxe 4, etc. They'll do just fine short of the track.

Most summer tires have water channels as well & are DEFINITELY better than M+S tires. I'm NOT talking about track tires here, but summer street tires.

My friend was in a Subie & he drives VERY careful even in dry. It was super cold & icy condition. I agree w/ you about lots of SUV drivers (even the ones w/ 2WD SUV ) think they are the best in snow/ice roads. The fact is most SUV tires are just another M+S tires... not a REAL snow tire (the one w/ snow flake symbol).

I just randomly selected 10 tires on tire rack that where summer performance/max/ultra tires.

Rain performance of 7.5-8.7

MS rated tires 7.3-8.8

so it appears its pretty much a toss up.

But I will say this... that was a pretty eye opening process. Have some new views on tires that I'll have to expand upon in research... hmmmm.

I dunno, regarding blizzaks: I feel they are overkill for anyone that doesn't see snow in their yard all winter.

all seasons should cut it as long as you buy some quality chains for the front wheels to be safe in retarded snow situations.

My '94 civic sedan beater hasn't failed me once in tahoe with crappy allseason tires, and I only need to chain up when climbing steep hills without run-in speed or the occasional time that the I-80 caltrans is set up after the frontage road....

just my 2 cents

I didn't buy an AWD to still put chains on the car. As long as you have M/S rated tires you're a go 99% of the time. I've driven in some gnarly conditions with my M/S tires. Just deflate a few lbs and be careful.

I'll never put chains on my suby. Sorry. Not gonna happen. We don't see those kind of conditions often in CA and they usually close the roads because CA drivers suck... and in days like that I run the truck... haa.

blizzaks are overkill for tires you leave on your car unless you live in snow but if you have extra wheels its a great option for folks that spend more than a handful of days up there.

Yessir. Call in the heavy artillery! Not to mention the added benefit of the intimidation factor.
