don't tell me boxing and martial arts are the same. what do you know about training and discipline??
Y'know, I've thought twice about what you said and I do consider boxing to be an effective fighting form. Boxing at its core involves a lot of discipline, it's just that many American boxers are/have been young and from poor backgrounds (I don't mean this as an insult or stereotype), so it figures that many boxers are brash. Just my thoughts.

It appears neither of us have given the other the benefit of the doubt. "just traditional" should have been replaced.

Training and discipline, huh? I won't brag about myself now since I only have time to walk the intellectual path right now and it would be fraudulant of me to claim myself to be "hardcore" - I haven't even gone to the gym for half a year.

But in my more serious days I've done my share of holding my hand to an electric stove until I heard the hissing of my flesh burning to test my meditation. I've done my share of hiking alone in the wilderness without food or water to "see a vision"

However I realized that though I had completely enveloped myself in my training, what I pursued was not real spirituality, it was not real buddhism or zen but merely what I believed it to be. Although in all fairness I don't don't think many top fighters out there who practice a form of eastern spirituality are practicing the real deal - they are pursuing their conceptualized idea of what path the modern warrior should walk. I don't think authentic spiritually is THAT important to a fighter, but rather his unwavering faith in it to fortify his spirit.

and man, I don't even want to get into a discussion about TMAs

Traditional martial arts don't exist anymore, and nothing you or anyone tells me is going to change the fact that there is no martial world today.

What we have today are a few remnants of the old era - such as aging Kali masters who learned in a village in the philipines and then fought the Japanese soldiers in WWII - but the rest of people pursuing this traditional way of life are not authentic.

We have a lot of people in America converting to Tantric buddhism because of Dali Lama and Richard Gere - but then the type they practice is apologetic, it is something tailored to western peoples. We have people pursuing honor and strength like a samurai of old, but they are long gone.

In martial arts history we can classify into village, government, temple martial arts. The latter two are all but gone with changing times and "village" - local styles still exist in name but you cannot seriously believe that they have martial evolution in this modern day.

SUMMARY: If you look at martial culture development (and I'm not talking about say Okinawan Karate or Judo, styles that came AFTER fuedal society ended), a lot of it is revolved around responses to society and its needs.
What you believe is traditional today is merely a piece of history which stopped evolving with the times because its era had past. Martial arts throughout history have changed much but simply don't exist anymore today in the way a lot of people envision them. They have been replaced with the form to suit today's societal needs - unarmed combat, defense against assault, etc. etc.

People should not fool themselves that they have any authenticity in relation to the true culture that was 500 or 1000 years ago.

Also, Sudo Genki's entrance for the 2005 New Year's Eve fight, K-1 Dynamite vs. Yamamoto "Kid" Norifumi. There's gotta be like twenty people dancing with him haha.

I had only seen the last 45-60 seconds of that match. Sudo did a pretty good job defending himself from the take down.
