Rotarys spit out so much unburnt fuel, mines used to do the same, no cat. I parked it in my driveway once and there was a fire in the exhaust which burnt the car to the ground. It was fast though, but it was an 84 GSL-SE, not a new one.

BBQ Bumper = Not Cool...
if it shot out flames in bursts from shifts is cool. it looked like his tip was a lighter...

Awesome ride for a project... thats the compression and the carbons inside the rotor... most of all rotary will back fire... even stock...

That was too much fire, IMO. Some short quick flames during shifts is cool looking but that thing just looked like it was just on fire. It didn't look like he was constantly accelerating/decelerating either, some of them were just during cruising it looked like.

Its either He has blown a Seal
Or He has a Fuel Leak...
My friend Rebuild his FD and ported it and had a fuel leak and when he turned it on It looked like that In IDLE... so that might be it...
