Who should have health insurance...

and who should pay for it?

Presently, I pay roughly $140/month for Blue Cross for me, Mrs Oaf, & three miniOaves.
It's pretty good coverage, I guess.

But I digress.

Do you have health insurance?
If so, how is it provided to you & how much do you pay?
Who should have health insurance?
And for you here that embrace Socialism, who should pay for it?

I have health insurance and I pay roughly 80 bucks a month just for myself, and boy is it crappy health insurance, but it is better than nothing. I think everyone should have it to a certain degree, besides illegal immigrants and non-citizens, Say everyone that earns a paycheck in this country.

The question of who should pay for it is a tougher one to answer. It would have to come out of your taxes but it should also come out of welfare checks to a certain degree and government handouts. I don't know if it would work but it seems like something should be done. People get refused emergency care in hospitals when they find out they don't have insurance.

I pay for my own health coverage from pacificare at $210 a month and it's above average coverage. My dental and vision is $15 a month also...

I'm actually going to take somewhat of a liberal/socialistic view on this because I’d hate to see people suffer without healthcare. Without getting in too far over my head I’d like to see "in case ****" type insurance for those without insurance and a slightly better version of "in case ****" insurance for those that've been without work for sometime in order to get a basic yearly checkup, tooth cleaning etc. Maybe even a rock bottom basic plan for those that have paid their taxes but recently hit a rocky road and are expected to get back on their feet shortly... sort of a "get out what you put in" type of plan.

EDIT: I don't agree with the non-citizen idea but do agree against illegal immigrant having coverage. For example, my Grandmother is a resident alien from the UK who's paid many of taxes and has been married to a retired/disabled veteran (my grandad) since he was 16.

I think the paycheck idea is crappy because illegals get a check for picking artichokes... let's leave it at taxes, shall we?

I understand the non-citizen thing and I guess I didn't really think about that one too in depth but if an illegal is earning a valid paycheck then they should be taking taxes out right? I guess I was thinking in terms of a legal paycheck when I made that statement. I dunno but I do know the current system sucks, and it needs to be changed.

Only with a valid payroll system so the answer is NO. There's a handful of ways to get paid and not throw -any- red flags from the IRS and people are (and have) done it since the tax evasion was known. From money orders to laundering etc...

When I first started in the Mortgage Industry coming straight out of the Army I was a processor for my Mother. She paid me in personal check and had it not been for a 1099 I would have been making free money. Now I'm solely commissioned as a broker and make money on a loan to loan basis when I generate business.

Just throwing that out there FYI... let's stay on the topic Oaf started.

I hate you for other reasons...just kidding.

Please explain your situation, if it's not too personal.

Oh, its all good - its actually not free, i have to pay half the amount that the insurance company raised their rate - so it equals out to about $4.00 a month. This company might not have alot else going for it, but it does have great benefits.

I pay for about half of my Pacificare health insurrance+Delta dental+small amnt of life insurance (~$150/mnth)...my employer kicks in the other half. What's funny is that on this issue, I lean more conservative (funny because on this issue, Salty leans liberal...). Here's what I think: health care should be up to the employers...but the gov't should give companys that have great health benefits economic breaks in some way. If the gov't could help (or require maybe?) companies to have solid, comprehensive health care benefits systems, then everyone that desearves the care could get it and noone would wave the oh-crap-here-comes-the-commies flag. If you're retired, the company you worked for should provide...if you die, then your dependants should be covered by your employer...for most companies health care is cheaper than it is for individuals because they can buy plans in bulk, so it makes the most sense to put the responsibility in their hands. Even though I'm liberal in many ways, I think our gov't has too many other issues to deal with for them to get involved in the business of health insurance to a large extent.
