Question What makes you an American?

Im kinda confused right now and I was wondering if you guys can help. A few weeks ago my friend's sister refered to me as a mexican (btw, we are both hispanic). I told her that I am not mexican because I wasnt born there. I was born and raised in California but my parents migrated from Mexico about 30 yrs ago and are residents and also working to becoming citizens. Well, she told me that to be considered American i would either have to be white or at least be a second generation hispanic living here! My hispanic coworkers laugh when i tell them that i am an American! Oh, and i've been told by my "white" coworkers that im not American, im Mexicanamerican. Do i really need to add the mexican in front of american? Im confused...... I guess im just proud of being American/Mexicanamerican/or whatever the hell i am. So what do you guys think?

Everyone you're talking to is a complete fool. You're an American first with Mexican blood and heritage. This is precicely the type of backward logic that makes people (most likely those in your inner circle) think that people (like myself) are against them personally (usually for racial reasons) instead of actually being against illegal immigration.

Your Parents, however, are not Americans as they do not have citizenship. At least not yet. They are undoubtedly legal citizens, though. I have nothing against this whatsoever. I applaud them for going through the proper channels of becoming citizens which will make them bonefide Americans like yourself.

EDIT: Wait, are you not an American citizen? If not, then you're in the same boat as your parents and the same applies to you in paragraph two. This doesn't mean that you are not an American by heart... it just means you aren't legally one on paper.

ok, that girl seems to be referring to American as the nationality of white people...for which she is a tard. You sir, are an American citizen. Just as much as your coworkers, just that their relatives jumped the border a long time earlier. To sum it up (and I hope this makes sense to everyone) you are AN American, but you are not American (no one is). You are however Mexican...kinda make sense? thats the best way I could think to explain it. However, people usually use "AN (Insert citizenship)" and "(insert heritage)" interchangeably

Yeah, thats what i dont understand. I actually encouraged my friends to vote but they either "dont have time" or say "one vote doesnt even matter". I have actually even been called racist or whitewashed because i am also against illegal immigration.

dude you are an american! i hate it when people say they're mexican/american or african/american or asian/american ect... the point is if your a citizen no matter what your heritage your an american! now sayin that your heritage is from mexico china africa or anywhere else is fine, but you should only identify your self as one thing 100% pure american!

plus kudos to your parents for tryin to become legal, i really have a hard time liking people that come here and demand rights they don't have.

Salty hit it on the head.

Also, remember that "whites" (including jews) from Russia, Poland, Sweden, France, Ireland, Italy, Germany, etc went through the same Sh*t.

Then you're an American. Simple as that. Be proud of your heritage but always remember you're an American first. Don’t let people lump you into the category that associates you with something you aren’t. Like I said before, the people you’ve talked to are the reason why illegal immigration has been pawned as something acceptable.

I would refer to you as a Mexican-American just like I'd refer to a black person as African-America. Because it's you're heritage. You should be proud to be hispanic.

Saying he's Mexican-American is fine seeing how his family is, in fact, Mexican. I use "Mexican" when appropriate as well. I absolutely hate when people refer to Blacks as African-American because we do it just to keep from offending them or ruffling their feathers. Then on the other side of the coin there's big populations of whites in Africa as well. My buddy has a few close friends from South Africa that speak Afrikaans fluently and have always been viewed as just "white." If they're lumped into the same category as the rest of us crackers then the blacks are "black." My point is some blacks aren't even from Africa whereas Mexicans are undoubtedly from Mexico.

Anyways...

Unless your part of a Native American tribe then you are not fully American. About 99.5% of the people in America have roots from other places.

Basically we all need to get over the "Where your from" and join together to make everything better. Not fight and make it worse.

BlueWRX82,

American Citizenship is obtained in one of the follwoing manners:

1. Birth in the United States or its territories
2. Birth to U.S. citizen parents
3. Naturalization (the grant of citizenship after an application and exam), or
4. Naturalization of one's parents.

Under no. 1, you are an American citizen no questions asked. You are an American by the text book definition.

Your "friend" seems to be completely confused. You are an American with Mexican heritage.
