They are gathering to remember the atrocities of Japan, but no mention of how the evil Americans saved their asses.... NICE! Dang that ticks me off.

Thoughts?

My thoughts? This is one point where I am tempted to ethug. You have crossed the lines of decency in a very wrong way.

Caption from a photo:

"A Chinese woman holds a placard that reads “Never forget the July 31 massacre” during a rally at the Japanese consulate in Hong Kong on Sunday. At least 200,000 Asian women were forced to serve as sex slaves in Japanese army brothels during WWII, according to war historians."

What is the point of them mentioning our involvement or any other countries? There is a specific point to their rally and it is an issue that should get its own stage.

It's just those Japanese that fell victim to that tragic day for the most part and are still alive. I think I’d be a bit upset after witnessing an Atomic attack. Father's friend married into a Japanese family and his mother-in-law witnessed one of the atomic bombings. She was about 40 miles away from the blast as their family went out of town from Hiroshima to picnic. She suffered mild radiation poisoning and lost her ovaries much later. She hates Americans and everything they stand for. Guess where she lives now. Sacramento.

But at the same time my grandfather-in-law and great grandmother-in-law (she's still alive at 100+) hate that era of Japan. My grandfather-in-law was a straight-up foot soldier then. All that's known of his past is of a gunto (Japanese sword in soldier mounts) he keeps stored away that has a severely bent and chipped blade along with a few pictures. He is now very pro-western and can't wait to meet me next year. Funny considering he was taught to kill the person I once was. After the war he became a successful business man and started his own export company in Tokyo. He personally did the grunt work in San Francisco just to be in America.

I was a bit concerned when first meeting my great grandmother-in-law. I was still in the service during that time and didn't know where she stood. Especially considering she's still sharp as a tack and knew exactly what imperial Japan was all about. She welcomed me and told my wife (then gf) she loved me. She more than went through the hardships of the war at such a mature age but never saw or had any ties to the victims of the A-bombs.

This is my theory on who is really honoring their dead. Those type of Japanese and their relatives that don't know any better from the 1st paragraph.

Anyone else find this odd?

“I can accept the fact that the young generation of Japanese is not to blame. It was their fathers and grandfathers. But until they own up, they’ll always be a pariah nation,” said 84-year-old Baden Jones, an Australian.
I realize this Australian happens to be 84 and I respect his opinion. Japan was pretty damn bad in those days. But anyone else find it funny that most of these protestors weren't even a twinkle in their daddy's during this era? Hell, some of their daddies nuts hadn't even dropped yet. The only ones that should be demanding apologizes were those old enough to have lived it. Period.

Think about it. Surely a large percentage of the staunch protestors are people in their teens and twenties. If they have so much hatred now then there's no way it'll disappear when every WWII survivor is dead. They'll keep blaming the newer generation as a giant copout. We know people can get past these differences because I just went to an Indian Casino this week and ate a hamburger. By N. Korea and China's logic I should be begging for forgiveness the next time I go there. It's stupid. This Austrailian's logic has to work both ways or they'll never been an end.

Alot of Japanese have no idea what their country did during WWII.

They got a lot of watered down history. The new generation knows very little about WWII other than the US dropping not one but two atomic bombs on their soil. Problem is they don't get the back story to it all. My wife for example had no clue about the attacks on Pearl Harbor being conducted unprovoked by the US, and that at the same time the US Govt and Japan's were supposed to negotiating a non aggression treaty.

Having lived in Japan for 10 years and being married to a Japanese woman, I have a unique perspective.

Went to Pearl Harbor in 1995 and witnessed a very upsetting display of Japanese nationals laughing, having a good old time at the Arizona memorial, while all the Americans were solemn and respectful.

On the other side also went to Peace Park in Nagasaki. Talk about a different atmosphere. Everyone stares at the white boys....you get the distinct impression that they would slay you in an instant if you even smirk or laugh or display any other emotion other than regret.

Several Japanese websites have had memorial reports in the past where you see teens and young adults talk lots of crap about WWII and America, but you always see a few interviews with those that lived through or fought in the war and their opinions are always more reserved and more accurately reflect what they went through. Seems that the older folks always say that the younger have no idea what they are talking about, in regards to WWII.

Almost all the other contries affected by Japan dring WWII, do show exceptional hospitality towards the US. Having been in Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore, Philippines, Australia, I can tell you personnaly that being a US Forces service member, you distinctly get the feeling that these people have gratitude for what our counrty did for their freedom during WWII. Problem is everytime the US faks up nowadays they forget that just as quick as can be.

Totally different than the issues with the French.

Very interesting perspective. I am a bit biased in this case. My wife is Chinese and her parents got out of Communist China 2 decades ago. Still, she is not altoghether removed from the Japanese atrocities. She knows of women from her small village that were brutally murdered (amongst other things). The Japanese military set the bar for brutality in raising up the most ruthless soldiers in the modern era.

And because their generals who led those ruthless attacks are still glamorized to this day, hundreds of thousands of citizens in the Pan-Pacific region remain justifiably pissed off.

If anyone wants to learn more about this from a Chinese perspective, check out the highly-acclaimed book, "The Rape of Nanking." There is a also an awesome book about both Japanese and US artocities in the war called "A War Without Mercy". For example, the magazine Reader's Digest used to show pictures of house wives holding up Japanese bones (skulls, shin bones, etc...) on the cover as souvenirs. Can you imagine???

But they realize that death of U.S. servicemen is probably why they aren't speaking Japanese, right? Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

If hatred of the Japanese is still fresh in their minds, so should the debt to the US IMO.

and that is because you lack the essentials of logical reasoning. the 2 issues are not solely inter-related.

So, what is it. Would they be speaking German or Japanese if the U.S. didn't get involved?
