If it's made by microbes that produce it using sunlight and photosynthesis, it's awesome. But making it from water with electrolysis costs more energy (which we get by burning fossil fuels) than it holds, so it makes the whole situation a little worse.
The second law of thermodynamics rules all, it cannot be broken.
MV, FYI, you're right that we don't have enough room in the US to grow the amount of corn and soy beans to produce the ethanol to run every car. Luckily, we are not the only country that growes these commodities. Luckily, ethanol can be produced from a few different commodities, such as corn, soy beans, and sugar.
I think that the world has sufficient space to grow them. Just, some will need to be imported, just like we export corn. What you probably don't know about corn (I wouldn't expect you to) is that after harvest, it will sometimes sit in huge piles (30ft tall) and are litterally like buildings.(see below) We have the supply, it's just not fully utilized.
Basically, we'll be ok as far as Ethanol goes, but I don't think that every car is going to run off ethanol, or enough to where it would cause a problem.
These are full cobs of corn, not the grain.

come on, now
whos behind it? the oil company execs that like record high PROFITS. I dont see how people find that acceptable. I've heard people say "well thats business." People having to pawn jewelry to pay for gas is not part of business.....its exploitation
WRONG: China and India are buying much more oil these days driving up the cost per barrel. short supply + high demand = high prices.
the profit margin has been the same over the past couple years, about 9 to 11 %. gas companies make about 9 cents per gallon , your federal government makes 18 cents per gallon and here in PA, our state takes out 31 cents per gallon.
you do the math. Exxon's big quarter of 10.8 billion dollars, what did the feds make? 21.6 billion and that doesn't even include the taxes that Exxon has to pay for doing business.
yes, blame the government and Bush and Congress (specially the dems)for following the interest groups out there and not allowing Anwar drilling and building new refineries and the republicans also for folding under the pressure of actually doing what they said they were going to do when they got elected.
9.2 million W-2s the IRS can't match an SSI number to the name on the W-2 for 2005 taxes and we're worried about gas prices. what about the 12 million illegals in the country demanding rights that people born in the country can't get.
sorry so long and boring
