Paratrooper who lost leg in Iraq re-enlists
It's shit like this that makes me proud.
http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/...eenlists_x.htm
[quote]Perez is one of at least four amputees from the 82nd Airborne Division to re-enlist. With a new carbon-fiber prosthetic leg, Perez intends to show a medical board he can run an eight-minute mile, jump out of airplanes and pass all the other paratrooper tests that will allow him to go with his regiment to Afghanistan next year['/quote]

"Perez has to rise at least an hour earlier than his fellow soldiers to allow swelling from the previous day's training to subside enough for his stump to fit into the prosthetic."

I thought about the same thing.
For those that have served in an infantry unit know that a 210 PT score doesn't take the cake. You're looked down upon for anything below a 290 these days.
If he does make division standards (210) then I guess there's only room for improvement, right? If those limbs actually turn into comfortable extensions on his body then imagine this guy during a long movement. That's if swelling eventually goes away...
Can you imagine going on a 30click march with full gear without having to worry about your feet? Wow. That used to be a PITA for me because I was always bigger than most other soldiers. I remember doing a timed 18mile march with 30kilograms (run actually) through the streets of Germany only to have the leather of my boot soaked through in blood and the skin be “de-gloved.” I think we've all been there to some degree.
If he can't live up to combat conditions then he'll sure as hell be a motivator for those that see him on the PT field or streets. He's a metal force mutliplyer if you ask me.
