Praised by Democrats when confirmed for a Philiadelphia-based appeals court 15 years ago, Alito has staked out positions supporting restrictions on abortion, such as parental and spousal notification.

Haha yeah. That's what i'm thinking. I don't think Mier was anything more than a poor choice on Bush's part. I still don't know why he nominated her as opposed to doing what he's doing now from the start.
I'm curious as to why you think it's a tactic, MVWRX.

That part was a joke. Sorry if it missed the mark. I just noticed noone had posted about the new nominee yet and found a little humor in the whole situation...but the thread is back on discussing the nominee, which is where I knew it would end up when I posted it...

You'd think if she was a strategic appointment he would've picked someone the dems would never go for. If I'm correct conservatives were the ones in opposition to her nomination.

Actually, the way I thought of it was this...he picks someone all the dems like and the republicans don't, get them (conservatives) all riled up and interested in the nomination, and then appease all of his constituants and punch the pacified dems in the face with a Scalia like nominee. Like I said before, I don't think it was actually a tactic but I do think it helped the new nominee to have Mielers fail.
