Supreme Court Rules Against Medicinal Marijuana

http://apnews.myway.com/article/20050606/D8AI99G80.html

WASHINGTON (AP) - Federal authorities may prosecute sick people whose doctors prescribe marijuana to ease pain, the Supreme Court ruled Monday, concluding that state laws don't protect users from a federal ban on the drug.

I don't get it.
Pot is a plant that grows in ditches & I can't smoke it for any reason!?!
How much of our money is wasted in fighting the use of pot?

Oh, well...at least "they" don't screen for 'shrooms!

Imagine this... Pot becomes legal. Government taxes it like cigarettes. The governement makes MILLIONS! Every person in jail for marijuana related charges is released, that makes room in our overcrowded prison, less people to feed/house in those prisons. Governement saves MILLIONS! Makes sense doesn't it? If you said yes, your right! Congratulations! Your smarter than the government.

I have never understood this myself. Especially when I can buy Alcohol, Robitussin and household ingredients to make speed, etc. I didn't bring cigarettes into the equation because they don't inhibit driving like the aforementioned. But even my first couple cans of Copenhagen put me to my knees years ago. This is coming from someone that wouldn't touch Marijuana with a 10ft pole.

We could use half of the money we spend on fighting the "drug war" to put a serious dent in the poverty problem we have in this country, but instead we blindly push ahead with this bull**** right wing agenda.

I can understand cracking down on people who smoke recreationally (even though I don't agree with that either, I can understand it.) But arresting those who are prescribed it for Pain by a doctor, is absolutely asinine. I can't even express how pissed off this makes me.....

Government

From what I heard, Clarence Thomas (conservative) was against this, as the interstate commerce clause is trampling all over individual rights when no interstate commerce is involved..... why are we screwing with people's individual right to grow pot in their own house when it has nothing to do with the problem of drug smuggling and corruption?

I'd like it if someone "well schooled" in the issue would clarify this for all of us... or at least me =). Who really gives a shoot about the patriot act when this kind of thing is going on?

Imagine this... Government legalizes pot... People grow this weed in their backyard with zero gardening skill required. No need to buy the stuff. Billions of drug enforcement money saved. Societal costs of alcohol reduced, replaced by much lower societal costs of smoking weed.

If you actually go back to the original laws that were passed in 1935 or so to make pot illegal, they're the dumbest reasons ever. "Marijuana will make you insane and kill people..." "Marijuana will get you pregnant... and kill people", stupid crap. By the way, if you ever get a chance to see the movie, ah, I think its called "Grass" and its narrarated by Woody Harrelson, It explains A LOT about the old laws and stuff.

I love this thread because all of my opinions have been voiced without me even saying anything.

To add some content, though, the original laws against mary jane were enacted to target Southern blacks and Mexican migrant workers. I want to know how many of the reps and senators that vote to keep mj illegal are alcoholics. My guess is above the national average.
