House & Senate... Gone?

It looks like the House is pretty much gone. According to what I'm seeing at this point in time, the house is led by the Democrats 20 seats. As of now, the Senate is pretty much split, 46-43 with 2 Ind.'s. We know that we can add one more to the Dem's, Feinstein...

You guys have any thoughts as the numbers come in?

I can't believe Casey beat out Santorum. That was a huge mistake by PA.

i think the rep will retain the senate....as of right now the dems need 5 or 6 sets to win senate...but if they split cheney has the deciding vote becasue he is the president of the senate......

p.s. i'm surprised the dems won in ohio....and it's a bad year for reps....

I'm thinking Dems will take the house (thank god), and the senate will be split 50/50, meaning rep. control due to Cheney as the tie breaker. Personally, I think this is the best thing that could possibly happen. Neither the Republicans or the Democrats will have enough power to do the more "extreme" things they would like to do. As someone who leans to the left, I'm somewhat happy that the senate appears to stay in Republican hands. I think the Democrats would probably try some stupid **** if they had both, and therefore hurt any chances of a Dem. president in '08. Both parties will hopefully be forced to work together much like they did at times with Clinton at times under his administration.

I have been happily watching the results come in while I've been sipping on my newest Margharita recipie to try . However, if someone disagrees with me and thinks that a split congress is a bad thing, please chime in. I personally have a hard time finding fault with the idea, especially considering that split congress' often lead to the parties working more toward a common goal, and in turn ignoring for a second their extremist bases.
Cheers
-Jeff

Update: The Democrats have 185 seats vs the Republican's 144. The Senate is still close with 48-2-46 (R-I-D).

I agree that a more well-balanced Senate will be beneficial. I also think that the Democrat controlled House will be kept in check, so to speak, by the balanced, or hopefully, Republican Senate.

Yeah, I'm actually quite suprised by how well the Dems have done in the house. They seem to have really cleaned up, or at least much more than I was expecting

I agree. I'm all about the balance of power. It will be interesting to see how congress pressures Bush.

As of right now, the democrats will take the senate as well. They need three seats...and they are leading in the three states that are still undecided (MT, MO, VT). VT is really really close, and I can't believe a democrat is leading in MO...but that's what's happening.

MO went to the dems...now just VA and MT left...both close...

I hope they don't get the Senate majority based on what MVWRX said. I think we're on sorta the same page for once.

I'm glad Arnold won. I knew he would. A lot of the Propositions are going the way I'd like too. I was on the somewhat on the fence with the abortion one but wish it went the other way...

where can i check on how the props went??

And it is looking pretty good for the dems taking over the senate... Hell i was just rooting for taking over either the house or the senate... if we took over both, alot of **** will change that's for sure... I'm just glad we have some sort of checks and balances back in government

and Hell... even I voted for Arnold... Phil Angelides is a slap dick, he had scandals back in the day... and ran probably one of the worst campaigns i have ever seen

UPDATE: House: R=184 Seats; D=223 Seats Senate is going to be EQUAL with the both the Republicans and Democrats having 49 Seats (unless they have a recount) and 2 seats going to Independents which includes former Dem Joe Lieberman. So you can take that as you want.

I'm glad that the Senate is balanced, but I wish it was one seat more to the Republicans to balance the Congress' having been taken over by the Democrats.

I'm just glad that Rove's scare tactics didn't work this election. Finally American's opened up their eyes and saw past some of the election BS that comes from Rovie....

Wow, I was kind of shocked this morning to find out the Dems may have control of the senate as well. I'm still not too worried about balance of power, considering Bush still has his veto stick. I too would have probably preferred a split senate, but considering its so close I don't think the Dems. will be able to go too extreme. Though I still would venture to say that unless the Dems really focus on what they are doing in these next two years, a Democratic House and Senate could lend to be what would kill a Dem. presidential canidate in '08.

The extent to which the house flipped was also shocking to me. Complete reversal. Shows something about the American public, eh?

And finally, I am increidbly pleased that voters in South Dakota turned down the referendum to ban almost all abortions. It proves that even in the most conservative of states, people still have a brain and are able to reject the obsolete, anti-progressive, and theist-agenda that the crazies on the religious right seem to love to push. America might not be that crazy after-all
-Jeff

EDIT: My most sincere hope of any Democratic congress is that they can finally push a progressive agenda with regards to issues like Stem Cell Research. It is about damn time that America starts to catch up to the rest of the world in the sciences, and on other social issues. Furthermore, I hope that the Dems. can fulfill their election promises of balancing the budget. I think if they can do that, they will have a much easier time in '08.
