You're right, MVWRX! The original Democratic and Republican ideals that formed the original parties never existed. It has always been Conservatives one inch to the right from center and Liberal one inch to the left from center, even before Vietnam when a liberal movement wasn't in sight. *sigh*
So if there's no grey area with you regarding parties unless you truly vote in the exact middle (which still cannot exist with your logic), then you'd agree that California votes Conservative for Governors and Liberal for Presidents, right? So how can the state be as Liberal as you suggest? The answer is Liberal DOES NOT mean the same thing as Democrat whatsoever. California leans to the left as a Democratic state, not liberal state.

This whole thing is over symantics....but keep in mind that the 'center' has always been moving, so even when there was no clear 'liberal' movement as there is today, there were liberal people (most of whom voted for democrats).
That's my point...you seem to be saying that 'liberal' was started in vietnam. But liberal has always been around. In fact, you can't have conservative without liberal because they help define each other. Like I said, liberal is derived from the policy of liberally interpreting the constitution and conservative is derived from conservatively interpreting the constitution...the parties that are around today have always been associated with their respective side (dems favor a liberal interpretation, reps favor a conservative interpretation). In this way CA is, in fact, both liberal leaning and democrat leaning because most of the people vote for a liberal interpretation of the constitution. Any connotation that the word liberal has in association with fringe political movements is a missuse of the word, except that a fringe political movement can adopt liberal stances.

Maybe that will help you see what I'm saying.
Nice smiley.

Right, but they were considered Democrats, not Liberals! The liberal part of the the Democratic party is still much smaller in comparison. Therefore you don't coin the party as being liberal when they're in the minority. You can't just start a hippy movement in the late 20th and expect to take over the name of the party that's always been since the late 18th century. One that just so happens to have far less liberal views and a ton more people to represent those views.
And you certainly don't call a state liberal when the people have voted for 4 Republican Governors out of the last 6 with one Republican Governor being voted in to take over a recalled Democratic Governor!
Encyclopedia: “Of the two major U.S. parties, the Democratic Party is to the left of the Republican Party, though its politics are not as consistently leftist as the traditional social democratic and labor parties in much of the world.”

The Libertarian party is the conservative party in America
The Democratic party and the Republican party are corporatist parties, beholden to special interests and corporations.
I have some small hope for the democratic party now that they have a new Chairman.

Not true, people have been refered to as being liberal since there was a constitution and democrats have always been on that liberal side of things.
