I bought stoptechs and they have lots of brake dust on them. I tried using brake cleaner. It cleans it very well but takes of the paint with it. It's waaaay to harsh. I tried simple green, but all it does is take paint off not so much the black marks.

Help me . This is them now. Still have stuff on them.

Brake cleaner shouldn't be taking the paint off of anything. Brake cleaner is essentially Petroleum and Alcohol, sometimes they throw in some other stuff for various reasons.

To get the desired cleaning, spray down the area with Brake cleaner, then use a little scrubby brush that they either sell for detailing wheels or you can pick one up at the hardware store, you don't want to use wire or mesh, one of the firm rubber ones should do the trick. A Firm toothbrush could be substituted but it sounds like you're having trouble.

I don't know what your brakes are painted with but they should stand up to more than Brake cleaner, it is the best solution for cleaning stuck on things. Are you sure the "dirt" on them is not some other substance? You could try using Acetone, I find that will get anything off but that will absolutely take your paint off. If your brake cleaner has Acetone in it, get a different brand, it shouldn't.

To prevent this sort of thing you can use Wax on the calipers to make cleaning them easy in the future. I prefer Zaino Z3 for that specific application. When I wax my car I use Z1 through Z3 and throw the Z3 on the rims/calipers to make them easier to clean.

Edit: Mineral spirits are also worth a try.

Thanks for the advice guys! I'll make sure to get the right brake cleaner. I'll use wax when I'm done. I'll let you know how it goes

yeah a ton of brake dust. i would try waxing them. then you just have to spray it down. much easier

I had the same problem, brake cleaner takes the paint off the caliper.
