Car Info: 02 PSM WRX
I have a 02 WRX sedan with SPT springs, oe struts, Whiteline rear camber bolts (-1 rear), cusco 22mm adjustable RSB (set at 24mm) and 225/45/17 s03’s (wheels +48mm offset) and my drivers rear tire rubs the fender when I’m pushing the car in right handers. I tried to check for camber and ride height differences by first making sure my rear tire pressures were the same, I then took a plumb bob and made a mark on the ground off the center of my center caps. Using my mark I took a 2’ level, leveled it and made a measurement for ride height and the drivers side is a ¼” lower than the passenger side. To check for camber differences I used the same mark on the ground and again I used the same level to make a mark on the top of the rim (lip). Using these marks I put the level against the bottom of the tire, leveled the level and made a measurement at the mark on the rim and noticed the drivers side distance to the rim was a ¼” greater than the passenger side. I was expecting to have less – camber on the driver’s side but it looks like I have more negative camber and less ride height on the side that is rubbing. I know the method I used isn’t the most accurate but it is the best (free) way I could think of to find out if there were any differences in camber and ride height and the results were consistent the 5 times I did it.
I don’t understand why I’m experiencing rubbing on the side of my car that has more – camber and no rubbing on the side that has less. I would think more – camber would make rubbing less likely and I wouldn’t think ¼” in ride height would make that much of a difference. Have any of you experienced anything like this and if so what was the problem? I’m going to put the car on a lift to take a better look and I thought you guys could give me some ideas (other than a slipped camber bolt) of what to look for. I purchased some Koni inserts and group N tops and I don’t want to install them until I figure out what the problem is. If it’s a bad spring I will buy some GC”s but I would like to avoid spending the $.
BTW, my rear tires didn’t rub when it was at -1.5.
Thanks.
