All GD/GG Impreza's have the subframe in US.
Same goes for all JDM GD/GG bug eye Impreza's in Japan except for the Spec C.
The new Spec C in Japan has the subframe.
There is nothing wrong with removing it. I don't beleive it is designed for impact protection. It could be for added protection, as the older Impreza's which share pretty much the same chassis, do not have one.
It does improve the handling, so if you remove it, I recommend getting a GC8/GF8 lower arm bar (4-point). You will need to shave off one bracket off the stock x-member and you'll be all set. Weight savings will greatly improve your car's performance and you will not loose any handling qualities if you add the lower arm bar.
The arm bar you can get is the old GC8/GF8 bar, or the one specifially made for GDBA, GDBB, GDBC Spec C WRX's.

thanks for all the responses!
I guess i'll save up for a replacement, and not simply remove it. Anyone have any suggestions on which lower arm bar I should get for my GD?

Definately the gt spec lower brace (3 pieces). kinda expensive..but you get what you pay for. Its a triangular design instead of the do-luck square design for a lot better support and geometry.

what about the cusco version 2 front underbrace? is this a similar product? i cant remember if it replaces the subframe or is additional... can we get a list of products and links to different options involving removing/replacing that heavy front subframe? also, is this part the same on all wrxs (sedans, wagons)? thanks!

looked undermy friends WRX the other day and i saw this subframe(never looked under a WRX)
if it was taken off it would have looked just like a GC
get the underbrace when you can but i wont worry about the handling without it because i dont think it adds that much more strength that you will notice the difference because from looking at it it has little ability to reduce flex but just weights a ton

Here are pics of my Do-Luck installed. The nice thing about this brace is that you can keep the OEM splash guard which may or not be possible with other braces.
