Coilover *pinging* noise due to no preload?

I just had a set of buddy club RS coilovers installed, and at very low speeds or at a stop when i turn the wheel about 1 turn it makes a pinging noise as if the spring is shifting around, so i jacked up the car to see if the spring was impacting the shock body or whatever when i turn it, but then i notice that the spring is not preloaded.

Should i just preload it first and then make sure that its not contacting the shock body and then adjust the height using the lower lock ring?

*Edit: what i wrote above is a little confusing, what i mean to ask is if its wrong that when i jack up the car and its unloaded that the lower spring perch isn't even touching the spring and i can move it around.
