detenation or spark knock/ can come from a few diffrent things such as carbon build-up on the surface of a piston. the carbon deposits can absorb heat and actually ignite the air/fuel mixture long before the spark plug ever fires.

"Ping" or "knock" refers to detonation. Detonation is the term for the air/fuel mixture igniting prematurely due to heat and pressure rather than from the electrical spark. When this happens, your engine internals are subjected to MUCH higher forces than from 'proper' combustion. Detonation is almost always what causes catastrophic engine failure (oil starvation is #2). It is called 'knock' or 'ping' because that is what it sounds like when you hear it.
