STi Pinging?
Hi STi owners. I think you guys on the island are the first ones to get the STi. Some STi owners on the mainland have noticed pinging on pump gas, at 91-93 octane!
I'm in the market for one and might have it by this month. I'm wondering if any of you guys have noticed pinging? What brand of gas and octane rating do you put into your car?
Thanks for the input.

92 octane, non-oxygenated petrol is what Hawaii gets at the pump.
Although I wouldn't be surprised if some of the guys are dumping in some 100 octane or toulene every now and then..

Slight pinging is O.K. you can feel the ecu pull the timing back.

Yeah, I also thought about the brand of gas and mixing with 100 but that's a pain. Here's the link on NASIOC. It's been a big discussion.

Does anyone know how long will the ECU take to learn about the pinging. Some people say their ECU doesn't compensate and retard the timing.

I haven't noticed any pinging, but I'm only around 300 miles beyond break-in. My boost gauge was install on Sat, so at Sunday's AutoX I played around with the hold function and noticed that I really wasn't hitting much more then 10 PSI on each run.
With the low end being what it is, you just don't have to put it to the floor as much as a WRX. I would imagine the folks doing 1/4 mile would be more likely to experience pinging.
I run on Costco gas(92 oct). In Hawaii there are only 2 (or 3?) refineries so there is not a big difference.
I'll keep listening...
