Rear end noise

I’m driving down the road last Fri doing about 45 in my 07 STI and I hear some kind of grinding sound. It sounds like my left rear brake or rear end is metal on metal. Talking loud grinding that sounds like something is not happy or ready to lock up. I’m a few blocks from Carlson Subaru so I pull into the service center and talk to the service writer. He says yeah he heard my car grinding when I came in and they don’t have any time to look at it and make an appointment for Monday. I tell him I’m concerned that it may not be safe to drive and he goes around back of my car and looks under. He immediately tells me I have aftermarket parts on the car, I tell him it’s only sway bars and he says they could be rubbing. I figure there is no sense arguing with him and tell him I’ll bring it back as I don’t want to rent a car. I take it home and jack up the rear end and pull the wheels, no sign of anything abnormal with the brakes or sway bar, the CV boots are all good, no leaks or sign of gouging on the rotors. I park the car, it still had the grinding sound and today, Sun, I drive it back to Carlsons to drop it off and lo and behold no grinding. I leave it anyway as I want them to check it out.

Any ideas what is going on? I remember I drove through some road work earlier Friday and there was a lot of gravel flying around, any chance I picked up a rock in the calipers that managed to work its way out today? Friday was a lot hotter than today on the coast so is it something temp related?

I’ll probably get clipped for a hundski and they won’t find anything but if the noise comes back at least I brought it in once and then they will have to fix it.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Dealer called and said there is a rock jammed in between the rotor and backing plate. Ouch!
