What is that horrible rear-end noise?

There's a noise coming from the rear of my 98 Outback Sport. It starts out as a loud rubbing sound, as if a rock were caught between my brake pad and rotor. As I speed up, it develops more of a throbbing whirr. It's loud! It doesn't sound exactly like something's grinding, but it has a mechanical sound to it. Could it be part of the AWD system? Anybody ever hear anything like this?

wheel bearing
Your wheel bearing is most likely the culprit. I purchased my bearing from Carquest along with the 3 seals for $104. The bearing is pressed in, so, unless you have a press, someone will need to remove the hub and press the bearing in and out. To get the hub out I used a 13 lb slide hammer. Jack the side of the car up you suspect the noise is coming from, grab the wheel at the top and bottom, and see if you can wiggle it in and out vertically. Then try it horizontally, grab the left and right side of the tire pushing in on one side and pulling out on the other. The wheel should not have any play in it. You should no be able to move the wheel in and out, and if you can, you've found your problem. Also, search for "wheel bearing," in these forums; there's tons of info already out about this
