Noise coming from rear diff? POssible damage?
I just got my car back from the shop after a bad run in with two guard rails. Not much was fixed susnension wise, just a controll arm. I know for a fact that rear spindle is bent...now to my question.
When I drive the car, everything seems fine, but as soon as I release gas pedal, a noise starts coming from the rear, sounds like rubbing knocking sound. As soon as I give it gas it goes away. I put the car on carstands and started to drive it first with wheels on, and still the same problem, then I took the wheels off and it went away. My friend thinks it could be the diff. Could it be? maybe rear wheel bearing? the bent spindle?
Car: 2001 Impreza RS
1.5 drop, stock rims and tires

Probably wheel bearing, although wheel bearing sounds more like a loud whine. Where was the damage to the car?

Did you get the alignment checked? Also, you might want to replace the rear diff fluid. See how much metal shaving come spilling out. If the noise goes away when you take the wheels off, I don't think it would be the rear diff. Any noise while breaking?

Doh! I would get those items fixed right away because they will lead to more problems. I think it should clear up the noise though.
