CV Joint Replacement
My mom's got a '93 Subaru Legacy and the boot on the passenger side is ripped in half, shooting grease all over the exhaust. Couple questions...
- she doesn't know how long it's been like this. Can I just replace the boot and hope that it holds? What is entailed in replacing just the boot?
- Any way I can tell if the entire joint is shot?
- Finally, any instructions on how to replace the cv-joint?
Thanks

just replace the axle
unless your on a really tight budget or something, just going after the boot/joint not knowing the damage may end up being more work for nothing

I wouldn't go to the extreme of replacing the axle yet. If you don't know that much about cars take it in to a Subaru dealer or repair shop. They'll be able to tell if it's damaged at all and should be able to repace the CV boot pretty easily and if it is damaged I think they can just replace the joint without having to take out the entire axle.
