You have several options.

1. Shocks and springs. Cheapest way to go. Consistent performance. Doesn't have height adjustability, but... you can add that by getting a Ground Control kit. You could have something near or more superior than a budget coilover kit for about $1000. Try looking up Koni inserts + GC (Ground Control Kit). You could even go with another shock like the KYB AGX or Tokico's, if you are looking for something a little cheaper. The Ground Control guys will help you pair the correct spring with your shocks and what you are planning to use it for. And the set-up is kind of more dumby proof. Did I mention there is a decent warranty on the shocks?

2. Cheap coilover set-up. BC, Megan's, others... For the sake of argument, anything less than $1200. You get all the adjustment you need. Height, camber, maybe even camber in the rear. However, shocks are probably junk, springs are probably junk. Shocks and springs aren't paired together correctly. It's kind of a crapshoot. You can have a great outcome, or a horrible outcome. To get your car to handle correctly, you might need to spend some time dialing it in.

3. Expensive Coilover set-up. Pretty much #2, but done right, most of the time. There is a reason why the thing is $3, $4, $5k+.

So... here is my recommendations...

1. Shocks/Springs/GC
2. Stance GR+ (<--- That's what I run, and I have had good luck with it. However, it must be said that I've tweaked set-up's a gazillion time.)
3. KW Variant 3's, or one of the other expensive shocks... (try the KW V3's, about $2k and pretty reasonable.)

Coilovers are no fun to DD, honestly I'd get some struts with prodrive or swift springs.

When you go with GC springs, they'll be giving you a coilover spring and sleeve. So... you'll have just as much clearance as any coilover set-up.

Here is my argument for the KW Variant 3's. A good quality shock. Good quality spring. Coilover set-up. And... a lifetime warranty. Essentially, you pay a little more for superior build quality and service.

Not true. Not entirely true anyways. Depends on what you get. If you bought a P.O.S. $800 set-up, what do you expect?! Besides, coilover is just a packaged shock/spring/mount combo. The reason why most coilovers suck is because it is an oversprung spring and under dampened shock.

I've ridden in a car with a $15,000 coilover set-up. It road amazing. Mind you, it was built for road racing... but with that said, you just need to do the set-up right the FIRST time. Don't cheap out. You get what you pay for.

The kit comes with the sleeves and springs and the things you need to make it work. Your job would be to source the shocks and mounts. I wouldn't reuse your shocks. I'd get a new shocks. Yeah...

Not hard. Time consuming. Not to mention, the build quality won't be as good, and the performance would be iffy. For the price of Megan's, you could get a GC kit, KYB AGX shocks and have a fair superior set-up than the coilovers.

My general rule of thumb is to not buy ANY coilover set-up less than $1000. Shotty quality, very limited warranty, and you get what you pay for.

I also have an 06 sti & was in the same boat as you. I went with Tein basic coilovers. They are very good. Stiff at first but after they broke in the ride is smooth. No dampening or camber adustment just ride height.

I was on stock shocks & cobb lowering springs which was very sloppy (it was like that when I bought it). Handling, acceleration, & braking were greatly improved, & I get alot of compliments on how well it looks lowered yet not dumped. They were just under $1000about a year ago they may be cheaper now. Good luck man!
