rear to front and front to rear is the safest way to rotate tires keep them running on the same side they have always been on

At America's Tire Co. We put the rears to the front, and cross the fronts when they go to the rear. That way, over time every tire will hit every corner of the car.

Subaru specifies front to rear tire rotation only, i.e. keeping the left-side tires on the left and the right-side tires on the right.

The Owner's Manual also has several paragraphs on tire replacement, specifying that all four tires should be replaced at the same time. There have been discussions on the board before about the safe and proper thing to do if one tire has sustained a cut or blowout that requires replacement. Some members say it's okay to just replace one tire of the same brand and type if the remaining three tires have only a few thousand miles on them. If the remaining tires are worn too much, this creates a speed differential in the center or rear differentials, and Subaru warns that this may cause drivetrain failure.

Note to myself: Never, ever go America's Tire Co. Even if they say they know what directional tires are.

America's Tire generally gets high marks from members. If they rotate your tires, just specify how you would like it done and they will accomodate you.
