towing with a WRX

I know towing with a wagon is fine, yet towing with a sedan is not reccomended. What is the reasoning behind this?

I don't know what your model year Owner's Manual says about towing with a sedan but my MY02 Manual states the following pertaining to the sedan:

SUBARU does not offer accessory trailer hitches. Consult with a professional hitch supplier to assist you in choosing an approprate hitch for your vehicle. Be sure to follow all of the hitch manufacturer's instructions for installation and use.

Never use a hitch that mounts only to the rear bumper. The bumper is not designed to handle that type of load.
There is a chart in the Owner's Manual for total trailer weight and a section pertaining to Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) and Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) but neither one differentiates between the wagon or sedan.

One of my good friends towed stuff with his 03 WRX sedan 12K miles and
he ruined his transmission from doing this.Get a truck or SUV to tow stuff it
is worth not ruining your transmission.

My buddy (with an '03 wagon) tows tons of stuff with his car, been doing it for the last 2 years or so.

Mechanically the wagons and the sedans are the same, same tranny, same engine etc. so towing with a sedan shouldn't have killed his tranny unless he was driving it wrong. I could understand burning up the clutch a little faster, but the tranny should be fine.

Nice choice with the pathfinder NTL
