Do you guys tip the mechanic when work is performed on your Scoob under waranty? If you pay then offcourse you tip but what about free work?
I have never tipped a mechanic unless he was doing me a favor on the side. At the dealer they make good money! You wouln't tip a lawyer, electrician or any thing like that, would you? I think a tip is approprite if that person is going above and beyond the call of duty. Most dealer mechanics do not because they don't have enough time. In fact if you wnat to tip it would be better on a warranty ticket then any other. Car manufactures typically do not allot enough time for warranty work and the dealer and mechanic get screwed most of the time. I have seen many instances on non warranty tickets where a job is supposed to take 1.5hrs and the mechanic has it done in .75hrs. He still gets paid for 1.5 and you still pay for 1.5hrs. This is why it pays for a mechanic to get better at what he/she does that way they make more. I have seen Master Cert. Ford mechanics work 8hrs and get paid for like 15 or 16 hours in one day. LIke i said if you have a friend at a dealer do something for you on the side and he wants say,$50 to do something then if you should probably give him more. my2C

i didn't even know that tipping a mechanic was a procedure!?
is there some kind of percentage rate? i mean some shops vary from 75-150 an hour for service work. even if it is warranty work. . .(of course u won't be paying)

When I use the dealership for any of my cars, I never see the tech who did the work. When I use a private garage (which I prefer over the dealership) I pay in cash or check, to save the shop the credit card discount they have to pay. In return, the shop has done little "extras" for me, no charge.
In my own work (computer installation, repairs, etc.) I charge a flat hourly rate and I have refused tips. I ask that they give the extra to their favorite charity, instead. (I'm not sure they ever do, though).
