Sudden change in gas gauge behavior?
Typically I'm not paranoid about this kind of thing, but the gas gauge in my 02 WRX has suddenly started acting strange. It still functions, but it is reading "empty" (needle buried and yellow fill light on) at only 11.2 gallons per fill, when it used to read E at 13.7 gallons. Furthermore, it seems to stay in the top 1/4 for the first 100 miles (I typically get 300 miles per tank, or I did before the gauge began reading empty with 4 gallons left in the tank) and then suddenly shoots down to 1/4 full in the next 100 miles and now reads empty at 250-275 miles.
Is this an indication of a faulty sensor, or sediment in the tank clogging something up? I do all scheduled maintenence including fuel filter and only use Shell V-power 91... what would cause the gauge behavior to change without actually just making it fail outright?

My 05 RS just started having the same type of problems and I'm starting to wonder too. I haven't noticed how long it stays above 1/4 but the other problem is exactly the same. I noticed that this started right after i drove two tank fulls right down to the last drop. I'm thinking i glogged a filter. I know it's not good to run it completly empty, so I'm thinking I probably glogged up my fuel filter a bit, but I don't know.
