I have a 2002 2.5RS and I love it..........I wished I bought a WRX in the beginning but after a while, the RS grew on me
besides,I do everyday driving(RS are more fuel efficient than the WRX...of course, it depends how you drive also)It has more low end torque than a WRX(Thats for stop and go driving)Still.......someday I want to own a STI

a different angle
here's a different angle for you:
Consider the stuff that you're pretty sure you're going to do to the car (from what I've heard, mostly cosmetic mods, and from the sound of it, some very expensive ones, like paint....). Now, consider medium to long term cost of ownership. Let's say you do get an RS A/T like you're planning, save up a bunch of money, and drop $5K on a sweet paint job, some nice rims, etc.... (don't get a cheap paint job, if you're going to do it right, it should cost at LEAST 2K, even if you know somebody, otherwise you'll end up with a 20 footer). Now, 3 years from now, you realize that you actually do want some more power. Now, you have a choice between spending 5K on a turbo kit (or more), or unloading the car for a WRX or STi. It's hard enough to sell a stock RS with an Automatic transmission on a board like this, never mind one that has expensive non removable modifications that are highly taste dependent (like, for example, a paint job). You would basically be stuck with that car until you found someone EXACTLY like you to buy it, or you would be forced to sell it for well under book, since mods like that detract from the value unless you have a perfect buyer.
I would counsel that if you plan on spending a significant amount of money on aftermarket stuff, you need to start with a car that has more potential than what you think you need, rather than barely enough. This way you guarantee that the WRX you get, once you get it dressed up the way you want it, will be a car you'll want to keep for a long time. and the WRX has LOTS more performance mod potential if you ever decide to go that route.
And I'm not sure where people are getting their information that are posting that RS is a torquier car than a WRX, or that a WRX is slow off the line compared to an RS. ESPECIALLY an A/T RS. They have obviously either A) never driven an RS, B) never driven a WRX, or C) don't know how to drive a car with a turbo. It is true that for a SPLIT SECOND until the turbo kicks in, the RS technically has more torque because it has a higher displacement. But the turbo comes on REALLY fast once you learn how to drive the car.
Furthermore, with regards to the gas mileage question, there's basically no difference in mileage between a WRX and an RS when driven moderately. EPA rates them 1 MPG different HWY. The WRX has the potential to suck gas like a vampire in a packed subway car (I've gotten as low as 12MPG from mine when flogging mercilessly, which is a rare occasion), but I also get 28MPG HWY from my car with the cruise set at 70. I would be willing to bet that most RS owners do not get more than 29-30MPG HWY maximum. Over a 15,000 mile per year driving cycle, this amounts to a heart stopping $46 dollars in gas savings at $2.40 per gallon. If you take into account premium gas vs regular for the RS, your savings skyrockets to a whopping $97 per year. Don't get too excited all at once.

you are thinking of a 4EAT? DON'T! I had a 4EAT (above) and that's why I sold it later for 5SPD. I got my first car without knowing much. I just wanted a car for my daily 80 miles commute. Something that looks pretty good, reliable, cheap insurance, cheap maintainance, cheap gas, cheap everything!
And somehow it was down to the 01RS. THEN I found i-club, rally (didn't even know such thing exist), autox, rallyx, etc. I was/am so hooked that I had to sell my car and get a 5SPD. Damn I tell you, that hurt my wallet A LOT!
I have had both 01RS and 02RS. If I have to pick, it would be the 99-01RS. In fact, I am looking for one right now.
It's lighter, more features (sun roof, lsd, etc), coupe, and cheaper (price/insurance). IMO better looking, but that is different for everyone.
Are you looking into the 02-03 model because of the look? If yes, then there is nothing more to say. GO GET IT! If not, you should look at what 98-01 has to offer in terms of features. Once again, good luck!

I decided to go with a RS/TS model myself. I would like a wrx, but since it is not in my budget i chose what i think would be the next best thing for me...a ts wagon...the car is cheaper on gas and insurance...plus for me it is everything i wanted in a new car...it has the power features i want, awd and even a cupholder! From the test drives the only thing i do not like about the car is 5th gear...you can not use that gear to accelerate at all during highway driving...
if this is going to be your first car, id steer clear of the wrx for insurance/maintance/fixing n00bie problem cost sake...

nothing bad to say about waialae, but i'd offer some advice before you buy- just to make sure that you are getting a good deal.
