Oil filter access - How'd you solve it?

(also posted on Nasioc, pls. PM me if this is bad form)

I'm getting ready to do the third oil service on my 2005 WRX wagon tomorrow, and each time prior I've been annoyed by the splash shield that blocks access to the oil filter. I figure that R&R'ing that shield 2-3 times a a year is going to end up being a problem down the line, especially if I keep breaking those spooky little clips

I was thinking about just cutting a hole out of the spash shield, and pop-riveting a piece of heavy rubber on the inside to act as a flap.

Does anybody have a more elegant recommendation?

Best,

- Eli

Cut out a portion of it to give you better access.

Dunno about elegant. If you want an attractive solution, get Jessica Alba to change it for you

I just remove the darn thing every time. I bought a bunch of those clips at the dealership for like $0.50/piece just in case I break one.

Which MY? The '02 that I have is easy, but the newer WRXs have much bigger splash plates.
