In my old Navy days working on diesels we re-purified oil by centrifuge, heating, and filtering. You should have seen the gunk that was left! Plus, you could see the sintered metal sparkle in the moonlight. But when you are long long weeks at sea, you can't be running to the corner station for more oil. Yes, diesels are different from turbo-gas engines, but clean lubricants retain their viscosity, and with all the modern additives, keep the innards clean. It is worth the few bucks to do frequent changes. Here on the east coast, temperature vary greatly; in some places dust is the enemy. Not all of us live in constant temperature clean air places, where 7, 500 between changes might be ok, no matter what the book says.

if you ask me the new quaker state advanced fully synthetic 5/30 W is the best hands down, especially compaired to M1 .. burns less and protects against heat better to what i've found (and it sucks b/c i sell M1 at my shop)!

Where can I get OEM filters?

The stealership would be happy to sell them to you. If you buy in bulk they usually give you a small discount if you ask. Check out the fumoto valve too, it will save you lots of time in changing your oil.

I changed my oil every 6000 miles or 6 months when I had my 02 GTI 1.8T.
No problems at all. IMO, we're brain washed to change oil at every 3k miles.
These days we're dealing with more efficient engine technology!

Purolator, Wix and NAPA oil filters compare well to the OEM filter quality and I recommend and use them, but the Fram filter is not in the same league. Frams are not garbage like the STP filters, but you will get a lot better quality with the others. Compared to Purolator, Wix and NAPA: Fram filters use cardboard instead of metal parts inside and have less filter material with fewer pleats and uneven pleat spacing. Some Fram filters have an additional problem... the Frams with the anti-slip coating on the lower third of the canister (looks like black wrinkle-finish paint) can overheat and will scorch, smoke and crack. I've seen Frams filters do this on my 03 WRX Sedan. The oil filter on my WRX is placed pretty darm close to exhaust system components.

I change my oil in my 02 WRX every 3K miles. I've been using Chevron 5-30W. I get it by the case or 5Qt jug at Kragen or where ever it's on sale. I ALWAYS use OEM filters, they are the best IMO. I do my own changes and it's cheap and fast, i've had lots of practice with this car and I make it look like a NASCAR pitstop in my garage. The car has something like 120K miles on it. I drive it like I stole it every day. It doesn't burn any oil at all. I always thought of going synthetic, but never did. I guess if you drive your car ALOT and hate going out of your way for oil changes and have lots of cash burning a hole in your pocket, synthetic is the way to go.
