Saving money on oil changes
Saving money on oil changes
Hey guys it's Mike again I wanna save money on my oil changes cause I wanna pamper my baby so I'm going to strickly synthetic oil but I know to get those kind of oil changes it cost some money so, my question is how do I change the oil on my WRX. Do I just simply drain the oil and replace the filter and pour new oil in just like any other car? Just curious I hope this question isn't stupid. I'm aware that the OEM filters are probably the best bet for oil filters but what about oil what's the best there. Thanks for the help guys.

yeah, same as any car. and as w/ any other car make sure the seal come off w/ the oil filter (sometimes they stick to the car) and use a new crush washer when you reinstall the drain plug. as for the oil, i use Mobil 1. its pretty much the best stuff you can get at regular oil prices.
Yes, that's basically it but a couple of things-
First, note which is the correct oil filter for your car because there was a change for the 03s due to the proximity of the filter to the downpipe, Subaru went to a smaller filter. You can check with your dealer to see which one your car should use, there are also threads on this subject on NASIOC and probably here as well. Once you know which filter is the right one you don't have to return to the dealer every time, a Purolator from the parts store is fine since they make the OEM filters anyway.
Second, because of the orientation of the filter on the engine (upside down) you can pre-fill it with oil before installing it. This ensures the engine has oil pressure almost immediately when restarted following the oil change, since the pump won't have to first fill the filter before pressurizing the rest of the engine.

Theres a real good thorough tutorial here: http://www.scoobymods.com/forums/sho...&threadid=3014

The oil filter is right next to the oil drain plug. Once you jack up the car and look, you'll see. The WRX is probably one of the easiest cars to change the oil to. I change the filter and oil (Mobil 1) every 5,000 miles. PM me if you need additional help and I'll see if I can get you any pics. Save the receipts for the oil and filter purchases just in case you need it for the warranty

Use Mobile 1 and a Pure 1 filter...
If you change your own..and save your baby from the Jiffy Lube..Oil Can Henry Bunch..You can pay for a sturdy lift and safety stands to make the job that much easier.with the money you save.I do take mine to a performance shop to do the Diffs..and have them do the who shabang then..but inbetween jobs i do my own..

also, even though you can prefill the filter very well, i like to go one extra step... i disconnect the crank position sensor and the cam position sensor and turn the car over for about 30 seconds to fully prime the oil system. then i reconnect sensors and away i go. the cel which illuminates from the temporarily disconnected sensors goes away in 3 driving cycles.
