Oil change DIY
Hey all... I'm pretty new to the Subaru world and a proud owner of a 2004 Impreza RS; picked it up couple weeks ago.
My question (request rather) is for some detailed and thorough DIY instructions for changing oil in this car. Being a brand new vehicle, I'm deathly afraid of making and mis-steps.
Your help is much appreciated... thanks!

Extremely easy on the flat fours from Subaru. Very self explanitory. Some need to put the front wheels on ramps, some don't. There is only one drain plug on the oil pan, 17mm nut size I believe. And the oil filter is right side up(vertical) with the opening at the top (for the noobs) and the filter is on the passenger side bank of the engine, very easy to see and to install/take out.
Drain oil, put plug back in. Take off oil filter, rub new oil on filter gasket(o-ring) and fill filter with fresh oil, put it on. Once the gasket is seated, turn the filter another 1/2 turn or so, but don't over torque, you'll regret it the next time you try and get it off. Now, your Subie has a metal crush washer on the oil pan drain plug--THIS IS A MUST TO HAVE ON THERE--Use a new one every time. Flat side against the nut head, round side toward the oil pan. Including the oil filter, 4.2 quarts is full.
Really an easy job, and a money saver for anyone doing it themselves. Have fun and if I left anything out, chime in boys and girls. Brian

Good instructions, note that if you have an 04 you have to take out the plastic guard under the car. I think it's larger than the 02-03 guards and you will probably get oil on it. Also, I usually take off the oil cap before I take off the drain plug. When you take off your old oil filter, make sure that the gasket is still on there. Some filters have theirs break off and stick to your car, which you will have to remove before putting the new filter on.
